Position Summary
The Cardiovascular Operating Room Nurse is responsible for circulating in the operating room and assisting physicians with advanced tasks or equipment during surgical procedures which include cardiopulmonary bypass/heart-lung machine use, trans-esophageal echocardiogram studies, cardiac output assistive devices, and vascular access and interventions. The CVOR RN must have the ability to perform and interpret various cardiac and vascular lab tests. The CVOR RN must be able to work under high pressure in a fast-paced environment. You will apply good interpersonal and communication process utilizing verbal and non-verbal skills to achieve organizational service goals of customer satisfaction and a positive work environment. The position requires the ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient. This position assesses, plans, implements, evaluates and documents nursing care of patients in accordance with organizational policies and in accordance with standards of professional nursing practice utilizing the framework for professional nursing practice and development. This position is accountable for the quality of nursing services delivered by self or others who are under their direction. This position utilizes specialized knowledge, judgment, and nursing skills necessary to assess data and plan, provide and evaluate care appropriate to the physical and developmental age of assigned patients.
Responsibilities
1. Prepares for surgical procedures by completing assessment of the patient and reviewing patient chart, diagnostics, and labs. Reports abnormal results to physicians and other appropriate care givers. Reviews patient history and physical and consent forms and assures completion.
2. Formulates and initiates plan of care based on patient specific needs and medical plan of care. Plans care in collaboration with members of multidisciplinary team. Reviews and revises the plan of care to reflect changes in patient needs. Provides care based on physician orders and in compliance with policies and procedures, standards of care, and regulatory agency requirements. Delegates appropriately and provides nursing supervision in the provision of care to patients by other licensed nurses and other personnel. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for whom care is provided.
3. Prepares for surgical procedure by ensuring all appropriate supplies and instruments are available and room set up is appropriate. Troubleshoots malfunctioning equipment and makes minor adjustments or calls biomedical equipment staff. Checks schedule and plans ahead for upcoming surgical case needs.
4. Documents surgical procedure in the patient record. Documentation is timely and in accordance with policy. Notes physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
5. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Participates in counting sharps, instruments, and sponges. Disposes of sharps and trash appropriately in designated areas.
6. Ensures that all surgeon preference cards are accurate.
7. Assists with OR turnover between cases. Participates in stocking, replenishing supplies and cleaning operating rooms.
8. Participates in or leads the training and orientation of surgical staff and students, as assigned.
9. This position follows safety procedures regarding medication labeling, appropriate handling of specimens, appropriate handling of sharps, time-out procedure, radiation and laser safety, and infection control.
Minimum education: Associates Degree in Nursing
Preferred Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing
Minimum experience: One year of operating room experience in the acute care setting
Preferred experience: 1 year in CVOR setting
Required licenses/certifications: Current, valid RN license in the state of practice, BLS certification, ACLS certification
Hours per week: 40 hours
On call requirement: STAR program
