Job Description
Summary: The main function of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. Position Responsibilities: You will perform blood draws, label specimens, centrifuge specimens, record maintenance data, and handle decontamination. You will also be updating patient information and collecting/storing specimens according to established procedures. You will explain the process of venipuncture blood drawing and other specimen collection (e.g., urine or fecal) in a clear and courteous manner. Demonstrating techniques using straight and/or butterfly needles, fully understanding all physicians' orders, and matching laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes are essential tasks. You will also label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by the test order, check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure 100% correctness, and package specimens for transport. Proper storage of specimen samples according to required temperature and following specific procedures for transport to maintain specimen integrity is crucial. Compliance with OSHA and DEP regulations, attending annual department trainings, and answering telephone inquiries by reading laboratory results will also be part of your responsibilities.
