Description:
The Surgery Technician is responsible for all aspects of patient care from pre-operative workup through recovery from anesthetic procedures under a doctor’s supervision. The Surgery Technician provides support to the surgeons and all other employees as needed to ensure high quality patient and client care. 1. Gather patient histories, take an accurate TPR and perform quality radiographic studies 2. Assist Doctors with bandage changes and removal of staples and or sutures 3. Provide dignified after-care for deceased patients 4. Read & study all training material that may be given & pass all quizzes that may be given with a score of 80% or greater 5. Obtain blood via jugular or peripheral venipuncture. Obtain urine via cystogenesis. 6. Properly handle and submit lab samples (blood, urine, CSF, tissue, etc.) 7. Place and maintain peripheral catheters 8. Place (K-9 male) and maintain urinary catheters 9. Maintain feeding tubes and chest tubes 10. Intubate felines and canines 11. Use aseptic technique when necessary 12. Clip and prep patients adequately for all surgical procedures including placement of purse-string when necessary 13. Know canine and feline blood types and be able to administer transfusions 14. Calculate drug doses, CRIs and fluid drip rates 15. Have knowledge of drugs used 16. Monitor anesthetized patients manually and using equipment (pulse oximeter, EKG, blood pressure, CO2) 17. Have knowledge of normal values for monitoring parameters and inform doctor of changes to patient status 18. Be able to set up for all surgical procedures. 19. Clean surgical instruments, wrap packs, operate autoclaves and gas sterilizers. 20. Write post-op orders as directed by the doctor 21. Scrub in to assist surgeon in surgery 22. Maintain a clean workspace in the prep room, operating rooms and radiology rooms 23. Breakdown and cleaning of operating rooms
