Schedule: Full Time, Salaried position

Shift: hours vary but typically 7a - 4p or 8a – 5p

The role you’ll contribute: The Director of Emergency Services has direct responsibility of the Emergency Department. The Director of Emergency Services assumes 24-hour accountability for directing all activities related to observation, monitoring, education, orientation, and training of personnel in a manner that encourages quality patient care, safe environment, and employee, guest, and patient satisfaction.

The Director of Emergency Services promotes an effective team environment and supports AdventHealth mission, vision, and standards of quality care. Exemplifies the principles of leadership practices, customer and employee satisfaction, and is a proactive liaison for physicians, employees, patients, families, and guests. Demonstrates effective communication skills, conflict management skills, human relationship competencies, team building, and family/guest relationships. Responsibilities include the assurance that the staff adheres to the AdventHealth Corporate Compliance Plan, to the rules and regulations of all applicable local, state, and federal agencies, and to the standards of all accrediting bodies.

AdventHealth Hendersonville (HVL) has been approved to build a second hospital in West Asheville. Currently this Director will assist with planning the new hospital and oversee operations from both campuses, with extended leadership at each campus. HVL is also undergoing an EMR change from Cerner to Epic March 5, 023. HVL also plans to prepare for and apply for Pathway to Excellence Accreditation.

  • Responsible and accountable for the planning, organizing, coordination, and organization of management and clinical practice activities in the Emergency Department.
  • Responsible to set measurable goals and objectives for optimum quality patient care delivered by staff in a sensitive and caring manner.
  • Responsible for the planning and preparation of the department annual budget.
  • Analyzes and interprets monthly budget and variances. Explains, justifies, and investigates variances.
  • Implements effective processes and procedures to address expense/revenue management.
  • Responsible for ensuring safe and competent staffing to meet departmental needs.
  • Manages the weekly payroll process and submits all required reports pertaining to agency and non-productive hours.
  • Completes and processes all Human Resource Department forms in an accurate and complete manner.
  • Provides effective coaching, counseling, corrective action, and disciplinary action for employees in a professional, legal, objective, and timely manner.
  • Conducts interviews for employment, promotion, and transfer candidates.
  • Completes employee evaluations in a timely manner through individual performance appraisals at 90 days and annually, as per hospital policy.
  • Conducts an annual review of the Emergency Department policies and procedures, and initiates/revises as needed.
  • Demonstrates effective communication skills, including problem solving, conflict management, negotiation, and team leading.
  • Promotes professional, collaborative relationships among other hospital departments and medical staff.
  • Models a service recovery attitude with all department and hospital customers.
  • Plans, conducts, and maintains record of staff and departmental meetings.
  • Participates in the review, evaluation, initiation, and revision of Patient Care and other department policies and procedures, as indicated.
  • Plans, conducts, and evaluates departmental Quality Control and Performance Improvement indicators in collaboration with staff, clinical leaders, and members of the quality/risk department team.
  • Demonstrates ability to handle multiple projects and responsibilities in a profession and efficient manner.
  • Responsible for departmental compliance with regulatory agency standards including TJC, CMS, and others.
  • Demonstrates consistent professional communication and interpersonal skills in handling urgent, confidential, and confrontational issues with a wide variety of persons and personality styles for effective outcomes.
  • Investigates and arranges educational opportunities for departmental staff to meet competencies, new technologies, and performance improvement needs.
  • Provides audit, education, and feedback for Emergency Department LIP’s in a proactive and consistent manner.
  • Provides house wide education with Emergency procedures.
  • Reviews, investigates, and documents patient care and billing complaints, with timely and complete feedback to patient and Risk Management. Looks for new opportunities to enhance customer and employee satisfaction.
  • Reviews and investigates lost charges for ER Billing purposes.
  • Manages special projects, as assigned.

Periodic Duties:

  • Consults with Vice-President Patient Services about departmental and patient care needs, department plans and goals.
  • Plans and develops schedule of annual staff meetings, competency/skill labs, in-services, educational opportunities, and staff participation in house wide committees.
  • Works with Education Department staff members to perform departmental educational needs assessment annually, and develops training plan based on that assessment. Maintains staff certification/training as required by state, Board of Nursing, and regulatory requirements.
  • Presents educational offerings individually or as a team member.
  • Participates in activities involving recruiting efforts, especially for nursing and other clinical positions. Visits local high schools and recruitment events.
  • Assumes the role of hospital Administrator on Call as required.
  • Directs and evaluates activities of Assistant Nurse Manager, Charge Nurses and Department Leads.
  • Performs quarterly audits of ER patient accounts to determine accuracy of charge practices.

Irregular Duties:

  • Establishes goals and objectives for the Emergency Department. Goals and objectives developed from annual Learning Needs Survey, meetings with all levels of staff, physicians, and outside agencies, reviews of aggregate data, and regulatory requirements. Develops staff education based on goals and objectives, and cooperates with hospital-wide departments for programs as requested.
  • Coordinates in-services and demonstrations of equipment for use, care, and safety.
  • Assists with coordinating orientation for staff members and students, including meeting with students and employees to ensure they are meeting goals and feeling supported.
  • Develops and implements annual house-wide education to meet regulatory requirements and to ensure a safe environment for patients, visitors, and staff; maintains statistics of employees completing education.
  • Counsels and coaches individual employees to achieve professional growth in their careers.
  • Participates in student, preceptor, and nursing training programs, as requested.
  • Participates in community events to support efforts of hospital.
  • Serves on process improvement teams, as requested, to provide educational perspective and to analyze for educational needs.
  • Attends educational programs to update knowledge and technical skills in the areas of emergency management, Emergency, emergency care, instructional methods, TJC/Regulatoru standards, counseling skills, etc.
  • Develops and monitors annual budget for Emergency Department in coordination with Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Financial Officer.
  • Develops instructional materials, evaluates commercially produced materials and cooperates with other hospital departments in the utilization of educational resources.
  • Assists in development and maintenance of competency reviews used to assess department staff, to include age-specific and performance competency formats.
  • Maintains records, files, statistics and required reports, including attendance records and other program documentation.
  • Acts as a consultant to other hospital departments as requested.
  • Maintains good interdepartmental relations and cooperates with other staff members to achieve department objectives.
  • Maintains an adequate department base of resources, including current literature in the field of nursing, nursing service, staff development education, and leadership.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of patient education as needed.
  • Provides computer access for physician and nursing staff, and ensures training for these. Access to confidential patient demographic, billing, and personal information is available and accessed daily when performing audits/investigations. Responsible for managing ER budget. Ensures that regulatory laws and requirements are met by nursing and medical staff.

The expertise and experiences you’ll need to succeed:

  • Strong presentation skills and interpersonal skills are required.
  • The work is mostly non-routine; guidelines are few, incumbent must use independent judgment in many situations; requires self-motivation, persistence, time management. Development of departmental policies is required, and considerable interpretation of inter-departmental policies is also necessary. Director of Emergency Services is recognized as an authority on department matters within the facility. Maintains discretion and confidentiality in all contacts. Continuing attention is given to improving compliance, quality, reducing expenses, and developing opportunities to build revenue.
  • Contacts with patients, visitors, employees, and physicians throughout the hospital are constant and significant, dealing with delicate or controversial issues requiring diplomacy and a high degree of tact.. Serves as a role model to employees and physicians for leadership, communication skills, and customer service.
  • Bachelor’s Degree Nursing or equivalent required.
  • Is a graduate of an approved nursing program.
  • Three (3) years of leadership experience in the emergency or critical care settings.
  • Must be enrolled in Master’s Degree within 1 year of hire.
  • Current North Carolina or Compact State RN licensure
  • BLS certification.
