Job Summary:
Coordinates lab education and training activities with emphasis on analytical quality activities. Manages point-of-care testing program. Participates in hiring of personnel, evaluation and monitoring of staff competency, and annual performance appraisals. Coordinates department preparation for inspections by outside accrediting agencies. Has substantial understanding of techniques, processes and procedures to perform the job and seeks to complete tasks in creative and effective ways. Works on activities of a diverse scope requiring minimal interpretation of policies and guidelines. Runs program(s) with moderate budget/impact.
Job Requirements:
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in clinical laboratory science or equivalent (some certifications will require Bachelor’s): Preferred
- Master's Degree: Preferred
- Five years' technical experience: Preferred
- Two years' leadership experience: Preferred
- Medical Technologist experience in hospital setting: Preferred
Licenses/Certifications:
- Current certification from American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Medical Technologist American Medical Technologists (MT-AMT) certification or equivalent: Required in OR
Facility Specific License/Certifications:
- American Society for Clinical Pathology Certification (ASCP) or American Medical Tech Board MT (MT-AMT): Required
Essential Functions:
- Develops and maintains a quality system. Develops and coordinates analytical quality improvement training and staff development programs. Assists in the evaluation of new instrumentation and test procedures.
- Performs duties of a Medical Technologist. Follows established standards and practices to perform a variety of chemical, microscopic, and microbiological test assays and related duties to obtain results for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease.
- Participates in the selection, hiring and dismissal of personnel. Participates in training. Evaluates and monitors staff competence through coaching, mentoring and conducting verbal and written performance appraisals.
- Provides leadership to medical laboratory technologists, technicians and lab aides. Directs technical work of medical laboratory technologists, technicians and lab aides as necessary. Supervises point-of-care testing area. Aids in the evaluation of new instrumentation and test procedures.
- Coordinates department preparation for inspections by outside accrediting agencies including Clinical Lab Improvement Amendments (CLIA), College of American Pathologists (CAP), American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and The Joint Commission (TJC). Performs duties of a Medical Technologist.
- Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
