Major Responsibilities:
Performs moderately and/or highly complex analyses with accuracy and precision, understanding basic and complex principles of methodology
1)Performs simple, moderate and/or complex analyses according to laboratory procedure and in accordance with manufacturer’s guidelines. Utilizes theory and principles of clinical methodology throughout the process.
2)Records, reports and monitors all patient analysis data following proper documentation and procedures.
3)Utilizes knowledge of LIS, HIS and personal computer systems as they apply to the laboratory
4)Prepares and/or handles all laboratory specimens.
5)*Performs departmental and shift specific duties as required.
6)Complies with requirements of Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA) and other regulatory agencies.
7)Maintains a clean and safe work area. Follows established laboratory safety procedures in accordance with those of regulatory bodies such as OSHA, FDA, EPA, NRC, etc.
Performs monitors and evaluates quality control, applies the principles of quality control when reporting tests
1)Records, reports and monitors all QC data in the proper manner to include log books and/or worksheets.
2)Helps monitor quality control programs, knows parameters and purpose of quality control and applies these within individual laboratory standards.
3)Takes appropriate corrective action when necessary and documents.
Identification and resolution of technical problems related to laboratory methodology, instrumentation and procedures under the direction of the Section Supervisor
1)Identifies and solves technical problems related to laboratory methodology including instrumentation and procedures under the direction of the Section Supervisor.
2)Demonstrates understanding of the basic and complex principles and functions of laboratory instrumentation used.
3)Documents all maintenance and technical problems per established protocol.
Correlates various clinical laboratory test results, applies these results to clinical conditions and recognizes accepted normal ranges
1)Correlates various clinical laboratory test results; applies test results to clinical conditions and recognizes accepted normal ranges.
2)Initiates follow-up procedures when patient results are outside normal range according to departmental policy.
Participates in development and education
1)*Teaches bench-level methodology and theory to students and other personnel.
2)Evaluates and validates new methodology.
3)Participates in interdepartmental cross-training as required.
4)Participates in continuing education.
5)Participates in instructing personnel in the use of new and/or revised techniques.
Assists with the maintenance and development of department policies and procedures.
1)Develops policies and procedures necessary to comply with laboratory technology, licensure and accreditation standards, as required.
2)Develops and maintains procedure manuals.
Maintains adequate inventory of supplies as required by the department.
1)Orders supplies as required according to hospital policies and procedures.
2)Follows up on backorders, missing and incorrect orders.
3)*Puts supplies away appropriately.
4)Assures that all supplies are marked with date received, are logged and appropriate NFPA labels applied.

Education/Experience Required:
- Bachelor degree and graduation from a Medical Technology/MLS program approved by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) or an equivalent program, or documented equivalent education and training.
- Previous experience with laboratory equipment and methodologies (preferably those related to areas of responsibility). • Basic computer literacy.
- MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), MT(AMT) with baccalaureate degree. ASCP Board of Certification (BOC)categorical certification (BB, C, CT, H, HTL, I, M) or a baccalaureate degree where categorical certification in specialty area is not available.
- Hazardous chemical exposure and contact with infectious biological specimens and sharps are experienced on a daily basis. • Ability to lift (medium -- up to 20 to 50 pounds occasionally and/ or 10-25 pounds frequently and/or up to 10 pounds constantly) and use keyboard and microscope extensively may be required, dependent upon job and shift assignment. • Fast paced environment with established time constraints.
