AECOM has a position open for a Solar Engineer to support our growing Energy Business.

We are looking for an up-and-coming leader with a solar PV design and power engineering background to promote our skills to new clients and maintain our existing client base. Qualified candidates will have a strong background in solar engineering coupled with experience leading tasks on projects. The successful candidate is expected to be a detail oriented, experienced engineer who can make decisions independently under the guidance of senior staff. The focus of experience must be in the energy industry associated with solar engineering and design and their interconnection and distribution systems.

Experience with battery energy storage and/or wind power is a plus. It is an excellent career opportunity for an engineer with a strong technical background and looking to grow into an engineering leadership role.

For this role, AECOM offers the freedom and flexibility to be located at a variety of Energy offices in multiple locations across the United States and remotely. Our team provides a wide range of electrical engineering services across markets sectors including transmission (substations, OH/UG transmission systems, generator interconnections, interconnection strategy), power distribution (OH/UG power systems, substations, EV charging networks, microgrid design, etc.), renewables (Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage Systems, Wind), and next generation energy (hydrogen, fuel cells, electrolyzers, etc.).

The responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:

  • Responsible for the solar PV electrical engineering design work on assigned projects under the guidance of senior staff

  • Under guidance of Lead Engineer, working with Project Engineer and Project Manager on developing design schedules and budgets for electrical engineering work activities

  • Solar PV system design including array layouts, DC string sizing, equipment layouts, and utility interconnections for rooftop, carport, and ground mount (fixed tilt and single-axis tracking) systems

  • Solar PV system energy production modelling

  • Developing solar construction and equipment specifications

  • Engineering calculations (NEC maximum system voltage, conductor sizing, overcurrent protection sizing, utility disconnect requirements, voltage drop, and conduit sizing)

  • Solar PV system One line and three-line diagrams

  • Bill of Materials

  • PV system cost estimation and payback evaluations

  • Cable and Conduit Schedules

  • DC and low to medium voltage power distribution design

  • Supporting projects through complete life cycle including the feasibility phase, preliminary and detailed design, issue-for-bid, construction, start-up, and commissioning

  • Participating in and presenting engineering work at client meetings

Level specific responsibilities:

  • Performs specific and limited portions of a broader assignment of an experienced engineer.

  • Gathers and correlates basic engineering data using established and well-defined procedures.

  • Works on detailed or routine engineering assignments involving calculations and relatively simple tests.

  • Proposes approach to solve new problems encountered.

  • Identifies discrepancies in results.

  • Provides guidance to entry level engineers.

  • Performs work in accordance with agreed upon budget and schedule with little supervision.

  • Assists in development of technical proposals.

  • Assists with estimates for the engineering budget and schedule

DCS-Energy

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements :

  • BA/BS (Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering preferred) and 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

  • EIT or PE license in either Electrical or Mechanical Engineering

  • Occasional travel within the United States will be required

Preferred Qualifications :

  • 4 Years of experience as an Electrical Engineer associated with the design of commercial and utility-scale solar PV systems is desired

  • Highly Proficient in AutoCAD, PVsyst, and Microsoft Excel desired

  • Experience with other software in the industry such as NREL SAM, ForgeSolar, and Helioscope

  • Battery Energy Store System and/or other renewables experience

  • MV AC Collection System Design Experience

  • Strong familiarity with the NEC, as well as related codes such as IBC and NFPA 855

  • Familiarity with utility practices, industry codes and standards (NESC, IEEE, PIP etc.).

  • Strong written and verbal skills with an ability to lead engineering tasks

  • Experience on full EPC, Design/Build projects from start to finish.

  • Strong familiarity with PV equipment and manufacturers

  • Experience supervising teams
