What are the responsibilities and job description for the Jr. Estimating Engineer position at AFL?
Job Summary
The junior estimating engineer works with direct supervision and guidance from a senior estimating engineer. Duties include analyzing and interpreting general business/engineering drawings and specs or governmental regulations and request for quotes. The ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages is necessary in order to determine gross margins. The position entails the preparation of quotes based on Customer RFQ's. Individuals classified as junior estimating engineer are typically those that are new to the estimating field.
Responsibilities
- Processes quotes, including project-specific, generic, and model-based quotes, to establish budgets for the customer’s project
- Reviews data to determine material, engineering and labor requirements for costing and maintain estimating and costing tools as needed.
- Assists Engineering in developing and interpreting the customer’s Scope of Work
- Develops new project budgets for material, engineering, and installation labor
- Approves and processes quotes, including project-specific, generic, and model-based quotes, to establish budgets for the customer’s project
- Offers leadership, assists and advises other Estimators within the department.
- Works with the customer, suggesting alternatives as required to meet the customer’s needs and expectations, as well as satisfy AFL’s sales objectives
- Communicates with the customer to develop a list of appropriate assumptions to ensure a complete and accurate quote package.
- Communicates with other departments within AFL to ensure a consistent quote presentation and budget to the customer(s).
- Review Engineering’s preliminary specification and materials list for compliance to industry engineering standards, customer contract requirements, Scope of Work, and related projects.
- Assists Accounting and Operations Departments in analysis of project budgets
- Assist Operations in understanding estimating methods used in installation.

Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years industry experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Must be able to present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers and the general public.
- Must be able to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions, percentages
- Must be able to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
- Must be able to provide creative solutions and logical approaches to installation and design practices.
- Must be able to travel occasionally.
- Must be detail oriented and have good organizational and follow-through skills.
- Must have knowledge of basic computer and writing skills.
- Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word is required
- Proficiency in Visio, CAD, or Bluebeam is required
- Technical skills and knowledge of Telecommunications and installation a must.
