Purpose/Summary

Akebono is looking for a Lead Functional Safety Engineer to establish our functional safety processes and standards at our North American Research and Development Center. In addition to establishing a functional safety process and culture, the associate will be responsible for establishing our functional safety concept and detailed requirements for both application and advanced brake technology development. This position is expected to lead and provide management recommendations based on GAP analysis of Akebono’s current development process and those processes and work products required per ISO 26262. The engineer will work closely with departmental groups including systems engineering, software engineering, and validation teams in order to achieve safety lifecycle requirements.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Develop, Implement and Manage Akebono’s Safety Process to achieve industry standards.
  • Perform safety-related analysis to derive and specify safety concepts and requirements for electromechanical brake solutions.
  • Support project teams in preparing work products following the safety lifecycle with respect to Systems, SW, and HW engineering.
  • Collaborate with System, SW, and HW design teams to provide a robust design solution that achieves the required safety goals.
  • Make management recommendations for continuous improvement and advancement of Akebono’s safety culture.

Qualifications

  • Experience with ISO-26262 standard and its process level implementation
  • Experience in embedded systems design including system, hardware, and software engineering
  • Strong understanding of the V-Model development process and requirements based development
  • Experience in safety analysis such as HARA, FMEA, and FTA
  • Experience in safety concept development through the establishment of technical safety requirements.
  • Experience in automotive development cycles and processes
  • Strong time management skills
  • Strong communication skills for both management and customer technical discussion
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
  • 8 years of industry experience

Education and/or Experience (minimum required for the position)

            Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar discipline with experience working in the mechatronic system domain.

Required & Preferred Traits and Skills

  • Required
    • Track record showing strong project leadership skills
    • Strong understanding of functional safety and its process level implementation
    • In-depth working experience from safety concept to detailed safety requirements
    • Experience in embedded system development for mechatronic systems
  • Preferred
    • Familiarity with vehicle ESC and braking systems
    • Experience with motor control and power electronics

  • Ability to define problems, collects data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Supervisory Responsibilities

            This position does not have direct supervisory responsibility.  However, this position is required to lead cross-functional teams and manage the multiple competing deadlines from each of the interfacing departments.

Physical Demands/Environment

This position requires the following physical abilities: to sit; to use hands (to finger, handle, or feel), to reach with hands and arms, to stand, to talk, to hear and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. In addition, the specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

The work environment is mostly sedentary; however, there is occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts and vibration and to outside weather conditions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
