Introduction

THIS IS A NEW ASSEMBLED EXAMINATION. The eligible list resulting from this examination will cancel any existing list and may last approximately one year but can be extended. This examination may be reopened as necessary and the names of additional candidates will be merged onto the existing list according to examination score.

Applications must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing.

Supplemental Questionnaire: A properly completed Supplemental Questionnaire must be submitted with each application. Applications and Supplemental Questionnaires must be in the possession of the Human Resource Services Department by 5:00 p.m. on the Last Day for Filing. Failure to submit the Application or Supplemental Questionnaire will result in disqualification.

Alameda County's Health Services Program is administered by the Health Care Services Agency and includes the following program areas: Behavioral Health Care, Public Health, Environmental Health, and Agency Administration/Indigent Health. THE POSITION

Under close supervision at the Nutritionist I level to assist in planning, developing, and conducting a component of a nutrition program; to provide consultative services on menus and nutrition; and to do related work as required.


THE VACANCY

There is currently one vacancy in the Community Health Services division within the Public Health Department. However, the eligible list resulting from this recruitment may be used to fill future vacancies in other program areas.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Experience:

The equivalent of six months full-time experience in dietetic services or public health nutrition.

Substitution:

Possession of a Master’s degree in Nutrition, Public Health Nutrition, Dietetics, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required six months experience.

Licenses and Certificates:

  • Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  • Possession of a current Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and good standing with the Commission on Dietetic Registration.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

The most suitably qualified candidates will possess the following competencies:

Knowledge of:

  • Human nutrition and its relationship to health and disease.
  • Principles and practices of current academic nutrition knowledge.
  • Principles of nutrition education and medical nutrition therapy for clients.
  • Elements of food value, costs and budgeting.
  • Principles and practices of direct client service delivery.

Ability to:

  • Plan nutritional programs and coordinate them with other departmental programs.
  • Provide direct nutrition services.
  • Maintain accurate records and files.
  • Exercise sound independent judgment within established policies and guidelines.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing with linguistic and cultural proficiency.
  • Understand and accept differences in attitudes toward health problems resulting from medical, cultural, socio-economic and other factors.
  • Understand the connections between social conditions (income/community economics, transportation, education, housing, incarceration) and individual and community health.
  • Communicate information in order to influence behavior and improve health.
  • Understand and incorporate the Agency and Department’s core values and ethical standards of practice into all interactions with individuals, organizations, and communities.

EXAMINATION COMPONENTS

THE EXAMINATION WILL CONSIST OF THE FOLLOWING STEPS:

  • A review of candidates' applications to verify possession of minimum requirements.
  • Those candidates who possess the minimum qualifications for the class will be placed on the eligible list based on an evaluation of education, training, and experience.

CANDIDATES MUST ATTAIN A QUALIFYING RATING ON EACH PORTION OF THIS EXAMINATION.
