Director of Development and Community Relations
this position works closely with the executive director and other relevant parties to assist the museum in utilizing all possible resources, private and governmental, toward sustainability while fostering community. the successful candidate will have the ability to be a team player as well as a team leader. they will build relationships with board members, donors, and community partners to increase the community’s understanding and awareness of the museum’s impactful programming.
The position is a fulltime (40 hours/week) unclassified position with benefits. The hours are flexible in that they include some nights and weekends. The salary is $37,400 benefits.
Tasks
- Secures exhibition, programming, general operating, capital and endowment support from corporations, foundations, individuals, and government entities and works to ensure effective cultivation and stewardship of funders.
- Research and identifies new potential sources of funds, creates appropriate proposals and successfully brings proposals to closure.
- Manage relationships with prospective and existing donors in all aspects of the gift cycle including: identifying, qualifying, and initiating contact with potential leadership and major gift donors; developing appropriate cultivation strategies for them, including working with volunteers; moving potential donors toward solicitation and closure; and maintaining stewardship contacts with donors.
- Prepares letters of inquiry, grant applications, grant reports, grant attachments, and other grant-related correspondence, and ongoing stewardship activities with foundation and government agencies.
- Organize and execute fundraising events with the help of the other museum staff and board members.
- Works in cooperation with the rest of the staff for operations.
- Fosters and maintains collaborative community relationships within both the public and private sectors.
- Works closely with University and LSUA Foundation staff to ensure collaborative and collegial working relationships that foster the respective missions.
- Expands the local expectations of what this university/community museum can be and identifies compelling ways to integrate it into college and community life while keeping an eye focused on building a reputation for regional and national excellence.
Qualities/Skills
- Proven successful experience in fundraising, financial management and working with Boards
- A talent for building strong relationships, trust and confidence with a wide range of constituencies
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to create an effective and professional fundraising program; skill and ability to build and nurture relationships with a diverse range of individuals; proven fundraising success from a variety of sources, especially in soliciting gifts from individual donors, Project/event management experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies and techniques in individual, corporate, foundation and impact-based, data-based fundraising.
- The ability to convey appropriate messages in a meaningful and compelling way, and to represent the Museum to the community at large through various forms of public engagement.
- Previous experience writing grants for an arts organization is strongly preferred; superior writing skills and the ability to craft a clear, concise and persuasive messaging are essential.
- Passionate about the power of art to inform, inspire and heal.
- Teamwork and congeniality are necessary to be successful.
Education/Experience
- College Degree required, Masters preferred in Public Relations, Advertising, Applied Communication, Community Organization and Advocacy, Marketing/Marketing Management, Entrepreneurial Studies, Arts & Culture, or a related field.
