JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The purpose of this position is to plan and perform difficult and advanced traffic engineering and Intelligent

Transportation Systems (ITS) work. Work is characterized by the requirement for performance of very difficult

and exacting assignments. Work involves the application of professional traffic engineering knowledge and skills

to a variety of engineering functions.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following functions do not identify all duties performed

by the incumbent. Other duties and responsibilities will be performed as assigned.

 Configures video detection systems, traffic signal controllers, and emergency vehicle pre-emption in the

traffic signal cabinet.

 Maintains the city’s intelligent transportation system (ITS) communications network. Configures network

equipment such as routers, switches and other Ethernet equipment.

 Installs, troubleshoots, tests, replaces and repairs malfunctioning fiber optic, networking devices, video

devices, and other electronic equipment.

 Assists with ITS construction projects and may coordinate with contractors, city departments, and other

stakeholders.

 Maintains the City’s fiber optic conduit and communication system.

JOB REQUIREMENTS

 Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or

technical nature which may be obtained with a two-year associate's degree, diploma or equivalent from a

college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Appropriate certification may be

awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.

 Experience: Minimum five years experience in a related field.

 Certifications and Other Requirements: Ability to obtain IMSA Traffic Signal Level III Field within 1 year.

 Reading: Must be able to utilize a wide variety of reference materials, design data, and professional

literature. Must be able to interpret roadway plan & profile sheets, fiber splicing diagrams, roadway cross

sections, roadway signing & striping plans, and traffic control plans.

 Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction,

multiplication, division, calculate decimals and percentages; perform mathematical operations involving

basic algebraic and geometric principles and formulas.

 Writing: Work requires the ability to write letters, memorandums, and reports.

 Managerial: Job has no responsibility for the direction or supervision of others but may provide

advice/direction to an employee with less experience/skill or tenure. An example would be a “II” advising

a “I”.

 Policy/Decision Making: Significant - The employee normally performs the duty assignment according to

his or her own judgment, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Projects and daily work

are managed with little oversight, however special assignments and significant work products may be

reviewed upon completion. Typical positions in this category are supervisory, highly technical, or lower

level professional jobs.

 Technical Skills: Broad Application - Work requires advanced skills and knowledge in approaches and

systems, which affect the design and implementation of programs, solutions for complex issues, and/or

processes. Independent judgment and decision-making abilities may be necessary to apply technical skills

effectively.

 Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: High - Interactions may involve support of controversial positions

or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations. Contacts may also involve stressful,

negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal

interactions.
