Responsibilities
Fire Watch
Maintain surveillance of areas where hot work (activities producing a spark, flame, or heat) is present.
- Before hot work begins, ensure hot work permit has been issued.
- Before hot work begins, inspect the work area for any sources of flammables and fuel sources, such as trash, rags, and flammable liquids/substances. This also applies to lower levels where sparks or slag could fall.
- Be familiar with facilities for sounding an alarm in the event of a fire.
- Ensure communication with workers in the area of hot work.
- Have the proper fire extinguisher or charged water hose ready for use.
- If unable to extinguish a fire in the area exposed, Alert Employees and activate the alarm.
- Shut Down any hot work activity deemed unsafe and take the appropriate corrective measures to restore and maintain safe conditions. Immediately address all concerns.
- Monitor the work area for any unwanted gases such as LEL, CO, H2S, etc.
- Document Monitor readings.
Hole Watch
Monitor activities inside and outside the confined space. In Emergency, the hole watch must summon rescue and emergency services.
- Enforce confined space entry Permits
- Be aware of all hazards in the space and surrounding areas.
- Maintain continuous contact with entrants Voice, Radio, and Visual Contact.
- Log entrants in and out of the confined space.
- Continuously Maintain an accurate count of authorized entrants in the permit space.
- Do not let any unauthorized personnel into the permitted confine space.
- Never leave the space unattended or perform other duties.
- Be aware of possible behavioral effect of hazard exposure in authorized entrants.
- Hole watch must summon rescue and emergency services when needed.
Bottle Watch
Monitor fresh air bottles and replace air when needed. Summon rescue and emergency services when needed.
- Ensure employees under fresh air are qualified
- Stay stationed near air gauges while employees are working under fresh breather air.
- Enforce Safe Work Plan for entrance to confined space under fresh air.
- Inspect the hoses, gauges, regulators, and alarm before use make sure all equipment is in proper working condition.
- Monitor air quantity and air pressure delivered to workers.
- Review Emergency Plan
Qualifications
- Must be able to work in wet and/or humid conditions
- Must be trained on the use of a fire extinguisher
- Must know how to properly use fresh air bottles and systems.
- Must be able to lift 30lbs.
- Must pass a Background Check/UA
