What are the responsibilities and job description for the Pharmacy Technician position at AltaMed?
Under the direction of the Director of Pharmacy, this position will provide support to the clinical pharmacists at the Medication Adherence and Centralized Prescription Renewal Unit in managing the refill authorization process using approved guidelines and protocols.
Minimum Requirements
- High school Diploma
- Pharmacy Technician certification
- Minimum 1 year of experience as a certified pharmacy technician or related pharmacy experience
- Bilingual English/Spanish
Skills and Abilities:
- Must be familiar with medical terminology to include an understanding of phrases and abbreviations in comprehending patient charts and pharmaceutical/chemical names
- Demonstrates exceptional communication skills, active listening and customer care
- Demonstrates ability to work both independently and in a team environment
- Ability to extract pertinent information from patient/medical record/other sources for medication review
- Learn and operate electronic medical record system and other software
- Demonstrate analytical and problem solving skills
Essential Job Functions:
- Assists in all aspects of processing prescription refill authorization requests
- Receives customer/pharmacy/patient calls in a courteous manner
- Gathers appropriate contact information from caller and updates electronic medical record with appropriate call details
- Under protocol, gathers information from electronic medical record regarding previous medication refills, previous and pending primary care provider appointments
- Assesses medication for inclusion in developed prescription refill center authorization protocol and refills medication following protocol criteria
- Attempts to solve medication issues, including prior authorization forms, sending messages to providers via the electronic health record system for outstanding office visits, lab work, or contacting providers/clinics directly for questions
- Forwards refill request to clinical pharmacist for approval or further review if refill criteria is not met per protocol
- Contacts patients to initiate or provide reminder for follow-up lab visits or office visits
- Provides documentation in medical record and communication to prescriber as per prescription refill protocol.
- Maintains appropriate communications with patients to update on progress and status of request
- Plays a key role in maintaining a high level of patient satisfaction by providing patients with exceptional customer service and serving as the liaison between patients, physicians and pharmacies
- Performs other duties as required.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, stoop, reach, bend, and lift up to 10 pounds as necessary to carry out routine duties.
- Hand and wrist dexterity to utilize computer.
- May be required to stand for extended periods of computer.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of computer.
Environment Conditions Critical to Performance:
- Work is in a medical office environment, climate controlled through central air conditioning.
- Low risk for contamination, when adhering to Universal Precaution, related to the performance of treatments
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $24.00 - $26.00 per hour
