What are the responsibilities and job description for the Curator position at American Craftsman Museum?
The Museum of the American Arts and Crafts Movement seeks a Curator to serve as a key member of the curatorial team. Under the direction of the President, the Curator will work with the other members of the curatorial department to accomplish MAACM’s mission “to promote an understanding of the American Arts and Crafts Movement through the acquisition, conservation, preservation, exhibition, and interpretation of the decorative and fine arts associated with this historical era in American history, the late 19th and early 20th centuries.”
The Curator participates in all departmental operations including acquisitions, interpretation, installation of the collection and exhibitions, docent training, public lecturing, and other duties as assigned. The Curator helps to develop, organize, and manage exhibitions, both traveling and in-house, including design and installation, production of interpretive materials, and managing administrative matters such as contracts associated with such projects.
The Curator will have the opportunity to create his/her own curatorial projects as time permits.
Responsibilities
Works with the President to help set the master calendar for exhibitions, ensuring balance of schedule, scholarship, and value for audiences in the community and the art world
Collaborates with the members of the Education Department to maintain and execute the Museum wide interpretation plan that aligns with the Museum’s mission, vision, and strategic plan
Works with members of the Education Department to create innovative temporary exhibition content and programming
Participate in the production of publications on the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, contribute articles to scholarly and popular journals when appropriate and as time permits
Conduct research and write exhibition labels, didactics, and catalogs
Required Qualifications
Master’s degree in art history, expertise in American decorative arts or fine arts of the late 19th and early 20th centuries preferred
Minimum of 4 years of applied curatorial experience
Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a successful team
Exceptional organizational skills, including the ability to oversee projects and schedules, maintain deadlines, work within budgets, set priorities, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Applied knowledge of professional museum principles, practices, and procedures
Knowledge of scholarly research tools and methodologies
Self-directed and motivated
Collaborative, flexible, and helpful
Excellent written, verbal, and listening communication skills and a demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and professionally, including the ability to be an effective public speaker
Proficient computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Database and additional software knowledge preferred
Additional Information
This is a full-time position, with a Tuesday-Saturday schedule
Compensation is commensurate with experience
