Responsibilities
The American Heart Association has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant News Editor .
This position can be home-based.
The Assistant News Editor assigns, edits, proofreads, rewrites and writes content in English and Spanish for the American Heart Association’s syndicated consumer news service, American Heart Association News. These stories strive to spread awareness, entertain and motivate the public to take action to reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke. The Assistant News Editor leads all aspects of the process of translating AHA News stories into Spanish. The Assistant News Editor reports to the News Editor and collaborates with freelance writers, experts and staff across the American Heart Association.
Essential Job Duties:
- Assign stories to staff or freelance writers, edit stories, route them through the approval process and prep for publication.
- Oversee Spanish translation process for news stories and proofread Spanish content.
- Develop story ideas and evaluate story pitches.
- Monitor the flow of projects and assist in developing and maintaining editorial calendar.
- Fill in for the News Editor when the News Editor is absent.
- Write scripts for videos and text for graphics.
- Keep abreast of news, trends and developments in health and science, chiefly about heart disease, stroke and related conditions.
- Manage interns and temp workers as needed.

Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, English or equivalent.
- Five (5) years of professional writing and editing experience.
- Experience leading and advising freelance writers desirable.
- Ability to understand and interpret scientific information and rewrite it accurately and simply for general audiences.
- The ability to speak, write, edit and proofread in Spanish and English.
- Experience and skill in generating creative story ideas and news judgment.
- Ability to lead and meet tight deadlines on multiple projects.
- Skill in oral communications, including the ability to ask probing questions and propose and explain ideas clearly.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
