Grounds Technician

Amherst County is accepting applications to fill a temporary full-time Grounds Technician position during the busy May-October season. This position has the potential to become a permanent position after six months. Responsibilities of the position include operating motorized equipment such as power hand-held equipment (i.e., concrete saws, weed eaters and chain saws), light and heavy-duty trucks, mowers and tractors; mowing grass and trimming shrubbery; edging sidewalks, removing trash and debris from grounds, and helping to install and maintain landscape areas. The position also performs minor preventive maintenance and repairs to equipment; performs routine technical calculations such as chemical application rates, paint bead mix rates, and calculation of quantities of needed materials such as stone, asphalt, concrete and mulch; performs general building and grounds maintenance involving two or more building trades; performs general maintenance in maintaining road and street signs and performs sign installations; completes necessary documentation such as work orders, logs, etc.; ensures that applicable safety precautions are followed by self and team members; cleans and maintains restrooms; assists in County emergency services operations such as snow removal, ice control, floods, storms, etc. This is an essential position which may include holiday and weekend work and requires being outside in all weather conditions.

Because this is a temporary position, it is salaried without benefits unless it becomes a permanent position. The salary is negotiable depending on experience and qualifications. The position requires a high school diploma (or equivalent) and previous experience in a grounds maintenance position is preferred. A working knowledge of maintenance tools, equipment and materials, the ability to use hand and power tools and perform manual work in a safe manner, and the ability to follow oral and written instructions is required. The position also requires the ability to lift and carry 80 pounds (i.e., heavy boxes, supplies, etc.). Attendance and timeliness are key to success in the position.

Hiring range: $31,869 to $34,320 dependent upon qualifications.
