Purpose: The library media center is a hub that connects and inspires a love of reading through authentic and integrated learning. The Library Media Specialist thus facilitates and manages an environment that provides a wide range of materials and opportunities for teachers and students; implements a learning environment which invites, inspires and teaches wide access to information to meet learning and enrichment needs; challenges and stretches a vision of learning possibilities for lifelong learning in a high tech competitive society.
Qualifications:
Masters degree in library science.
Appropriate professional licensure in the State of Kansas.
Such alternatives to the above qualifications that the Board of Education may find appropriate and acceptable (i.e. degree completion program, license waiver, etc.)

Position Objectives:
To ensure that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information
To empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical users of information
To instill a love of learning in all students and ensure equitable access to information
To collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons and units of instruction, and assess student learning and instructional effectiveness
Essential Functions:
Create an environment that is conducive to active and participatory learning, resource-based instructional practices, and collaboration with teaching staff.
Collaborate with teachers and students to design and teach engaging inquiry and learning experiences and assessments that incorporate multiple literacies and foster critical thinking.
Join with teachers and others to plan and implement meaningful experiences that will promote a love of reading and lifelong learning.
Acquire, develop, and maintain a collection of resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school community.
Organize the collection for maximum and effective use.
Guide students in reading: for understanding, for exposure to diversity of viewpoints and genres, and for pleasure.
Guide students to use information for defined and self-defined purposes.
Build on prior knowledge and constructing new knowledge.
Embrace the world of information and all its formats.
Work with peers in successful collaboration for learning.
Create and maintain in the school library a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, flexible, and conducive to student learning.
Provide student accessibility to staff and resources at point of need, through scheduling and staff resources.
Advocate, communicate, and promote the school library media center program.
Use effective management principles, including the personnel, volunteers, resources, and facilities, in developing and implementing program goals and objectives.
Participate in the recruiting, hiring, and training of library clerk.
Prepare, justify, and administer the school library program budget to support specific program goals.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
