The Dean of Students is responsible for supporting, building and teaching a school culture that is trauma informed, infused with Sanctuary principles, and reflects a deep commitment to therapeutic resolution of conflict and crises. The Dean of Students helps to create protocols, processes, and awareness amongst all members of the school community that reflect best practices in the field of social and emotional well-being in schools, to include but not be limited by Sanctuary, mindfulness practices, problem solving that is solution and skills focused, and consequences that are clear, consistent, firm, restorative but not simply punitive.

The Dean works closely with the Assistant Principal, Curriculum Coordinator, Captain of Support, Clinical Directors, Principal, Psychology team and all leadership in the school to support the mission and vision of school and Campus Programs and build and maintain a positive school culture. He/she is responsible for continually modeling, teaching and assisting in the effective resolution of conflicts; setting limits regarding moral, social, psychological and physical safety; ensuring that the social safety of students is protected in each classroom, that student leaders; all staff in the school are trained in conflict resolution and other restorative practices.

He or she is also responsible for the effective and organized maintenance of all records regarding these practices, suspension hearings, and other forms of school discipline. He or she supervises the Captain of Support, and ensures that problems that arise with individual students are addressed systemically using a Sanctuary lens. He or she is also responsible to ensure that issues related to safety are addressed effectively, looking at both the immediate safety needs as well as systems issues that must be addressed to increase overall social, emotional, physical and moral safety.

Finally, he or she is an important liaison with families and stakeholders, leading suspension hearings, leading red flags with families and teams, and providing an important connection to families in order to increase our family engagement.

Work schedule is generally, 7:00 am – 3 pm weekdays but hours are required to be flexible based on program needs. Works the school calendar.

The qualified candidate will possess:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Master’s in Social Work, or other related Master’s Degree (Required)
  • Has 5 years experience in teaching (Required)
  • At least 2 years experience supervising in an educational setting (Required)
  • High level of personal organization and integrity
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • High level of Emotional Intelligence
  • Ability to adhere to our organization’s core values
  • Valid NYS Driver’s License in good standing
  • Physical Requirements: Reach, Walk and Climb Stairs
