PRIMARY FUNCTION:
The Director of Communication Strategy, Central Division is a collaborative role entrusted to build and execute a strategy to amplify ADL’s voice and reach within the Central Division. This role will lead a coordinated Divisional public relations and media relations outreach that positions ADL and ADL staff as experts and thought leaders across the Division’s media markets. The Divisional Director of Communication Strategy also works closely with regional teams to choreograph fresh, up-to-date Regional website content and manage regional social media accounts to speak in one voice and focus on upcoming activities and initiatives, current work within the Division and nationally, and ADL successes. ADL Divisions are set geographic areas that include multiple ADL offices and usually involving multiple states. ADL’s Division structure includes 25 regions that are grouped into four geographic areas – North, South, Central and West. The Central Division includes the Austin, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston and St. Louis media markets.
- Media Relations
- Implement a proactive divisional media relations strategy, working to develop relationships with key reporters and secure coverage highlighting ADL’s issues, leaders, and thought leadership.
- Respond to and coordinate media inquiries, interview requests, and proactive outreach on issues for Divisional and Regional team members, escalating to the national communications team as needed.
- Identify and prepare ADL team members for interviews with talking points and prep sessions as needed.
- Monitor news for coverage on issues corresponding to ADL or ADL’s mission in collaboration with Regional team members

Draft press materials and edit as needed, including press releases, statements and comments, op-eds, talking points, fact-sheets, and more.
- Identify key public relations outreach goals and actionable tactics for the Division to amplify ADL’s voice.
- Collaborate across departments (Education, Civil Rights, Development and Regional) to identify and cultivate coverage opportunities to raise public awareness of ADL issues, programs and individuals.
- Draft materials for non-media sources as needed
- In coordination with the Division Vice President, Director of Philanthropic Outreach and Regional Directors, serve as a spokesperson to local media as needed.
- Serve as an ADL brand ambassador for the Division.
- Draft website and other non-media related content on a limited basis as needed.
- Participate in and support Regional events and programs as needed.
- Serve as a point of communication for external contacts and stakeholders.
- Strong communicator, both written and verbal, with effective presentation and public speaking skills required.
- Strong familiarity with the current media landscape and knowledge of local market news outlets, reporters, and influencers is essential.
- Ability to think creatively to identify opportunities to connect ADL’s mission, values, and priority projects to the current cultural moment and develop narrative frames to impact public engagement and discourse, specifically in local markets.
- Demonstrated ability to write persuasive materials including talking points, op-eds, press releases, and messaging documents on deadline.
- Copyediting skills and knowledge of AP Style guidelines a must.
- Understanding of and demonstrated experience utilizing Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram and other social media platforms for outreach and engagement essential.
Eight or more years of professional media or public relations experience required.- Solid media contacts in at least one or more divisional media market required. Contacts in media markets within the Division strongly preferred.
- Experience serving as an on-record spokesperson for an organization highly desired.
- Professional record of successful media placements and familiarity with Jewish press preferred.
- Experience building a collaborative media and outreach strategy with multiple stakeholders preferred.
- Agency or nonprofit experience preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in public relations or a communications-related field, or equivalent experience, required.

- This position has a salary range of $73,000 to $106,000. This salary range is reflective of a position based in Dallas, Texas. Please note that actual salaries are commensurate with experience and reflect the budget for a given position, and since ADL has a location-based compensation structure, there may be a different range for candidates in other locations.
