Test Engineer I - Apex, NC
The Blueprint (Role Summary)
Reporting to the Test Lab Supervisor, R&D, this position is responsible for the design and development of new automated test fixtures and the improvement of existing test fixtures. Test fixtures are used to test various products throughout the design stage. Fixtures that are needed will be anywhere from small mechanical designs which improve efficiency and productivity on existing equipment, to completely new automated mechanical/electrical designs for life cycle testing utilizing pneumatic cylinders, sensors, and/or motors and switches. With minimal direction from engineering, the candidate will design and construct mechanical and electrical fixtures from the ground up.
This position requires strong mechanical and electrical design knowledge, as well as working knowledge of PLC control systems & electro-mechanical systems. Must have experience with automation and data acquisition, using and selecting the proper sensors for automation, and the ability to program PLCs with ladder logic software from scratch. Candidate must be hands on from concept to final design to prove out functionality. The candidate will use CAD software (Creo) for documenting designs.
This position requires ability to interface with the engineering, quality, and marketing teams. Candidate will be working with CAD (Creo), Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), SharePoint, and any software necessary for control systems.
The Build (Key Responsibilities)
- * Responsible for full ownership of all mechanical, electrical, and programmed PLC designs from the ground up.
- * Design and construct simple to complex test fixtures for product evaluation to support product teams
- * Direct technicians running tests, and model makers for creating and assembling designs. Effectively communicate any modifications or adjustments needed to ensure design is operating correctly.
- * Determines the best approach for every new fixture design without direction. Independently interface with Engineering and Test Lab. If advanced technical support is needed, contact outside suppliers as necessary.
- * Continuous improvement of existing test procedures. This includes fixtures, automation, human machine interface, data acquisition and procedures
- * Increase productivity efficiency, and data output in the test lab
- * Document designs and procedures to support repeatable results of all testing
The Toolbox (Qualifications)
- * Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline required
- * 2-3 years of experience in similar role or position
- * Experience with CAD (Creo preferred)
- * PLC programming experience preferred
- * Knowledge of DC motors, stepper motors, servos and pneumatics preferred
- * Strong knowledge of engineering principles and an understanding of design intent
- * Strong interpersonal skills and good oral and written communication skills
- * Strong cross-functional team work with a customer driven approach
- * Hands-on person who is highly motivated, drives for standardization and continuous improvement
