Director of Music/Organist

The Arnolia United Methodist Church in Parkville, Maryland, is seeking a part time to provide music leadership for the congregation. The successful candidate must have a heart for worshiping God, the ability to work well with teams, and effective communication and organizational skills. The Director of Music / Organist is responsible for providing leadership for our Adult Choir and for playing the organ or piano as appropriate for the worship services of the church. There are currently volunteer leaders of our Praise Band and Bell Choir who are supervised by the Pastor. The music program is enabled by a 1994 Rodgers Model 955 organ, and a 1976 Baldwin Model R grand piano.

2. A commitment to glorify God and build up the Body of Christ through the ministry of music.

3. A sense of humility through teamwork.

Educational / Experiential Preferences:

1. Must have appropriate musical training to direct an adult SATB volunteer choir, molding it into a cohesive musical unit and training its members in the fine art of choral singing.

2. Must have formal musical training in both the organ and piano.

3. A minimum of one year’s experience in directing an adult vocal choir in a church setting is desired, with two years’ experience preferred.

4. A minimum of one year’s experience in playing the organ in a church setting is desired, with two years’ experience preferred.

5. Advanced training in keyboarding skills with emphasis in playing church music on the organ is preferred.

6. Formal training in choral methods is desired.

Job Responsibilities:

1. Plan, along with the Pastor and other volunteer musical directors, music suitable for the Christian Liturgical Year, including review, selection, and acquisition of new music.

2. Direct the adult choir, and arrange special music via the various choirs, soloists, and special groups for the worship services.

3. Play the organ and lead the congregational music for the worship services of the church.

4. Play the organ during special festival days of the church year (including but not limited to Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Ash Wednesday, Holy Thursday, and Good Friday) in consultation with the Pastor.

5. Be available to play at weddings, funerals and other special events as needed. Additional compensation will be extended for weddings and funerals.

6. Perform other duties as assigned.
