Responsibilities
Under limited supervision, responsible and accountable for all routine inspection, maintenance, repair and installation of the hospital plumbing system and other mechanical equipment.
- Overhaul, maintain, repair and install hospital plumbing systems. Maintain, repair, operate and install carts, beds, wheelchairs, blood pressure units, ladders, faucets, valves, backflow devices and other metal furnishings. Also install paper towel and soap dispensers, plumbing fittings and fixtures. Assure that all installations are in conformance with national, state and local plumbing codes. Perform preventive maintenance on all equipment and fixtures. Keep a sufficient inventory of spare parts on hand to maintain the hospital plumbing systems and mechanical equipment in good working order and make emergency repairs when needed.
- Receive assignments and work orders. Review work orders for priority status and designated time schedules. Read and interpret blueprints and specifications and estimate time, material and cost requirements. Requisition material and supplies; prepare and assemble materials, tools, supplies and equipment for work to be performed. Assure that all pipes, valves, drains, lines and other devices are properly marked as to the circuits and functions they control. While working on electrical pumps and other devises, performs lock out, tag out procedures per departmental policy.
- Maintain all required records and documents relative to preventive and corrective maintenance activities. Maintain appropriate instruction manuals, technical documents, schematics, and blueprints. Complete all work orders in a timely, legible manner in order that complete and meaningful equipment histories are maintained.
- Respond to emergency calls in a timely manner.
- Apply cost-effective measures in order to improve efficiency and support cost containment efforts while delivering a high quality service. Provides Values-Added customer service consistent with hospital policy.
- Keep work area clean, orderly and safe. Assure proper care in use of tools, equipment and supplies.
- Demonstrate safe work practices and attitudes, follow safety rules to prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participate in organizational and department safety programs. Improve patient safety in the delivery of health care by understanding and applying the patient safety goal for SJPHS/Ascension of no preventable deaths or injuries.
- Specific Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Ability to work with power equipment; ability to work with hazardous equipment.
Requirements
Licensure / Certification / Registration:
- One or more of the following required:
- Licensed Journeyman.
- Master Plumber.
Education:
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Related trade school preferred.
- Apprenticeship preferred.
Work Experience:
- Three to five years required.
