Job Description
This position serves as an additional non-academic resource for justice-impacted students who are or wish to engage with Ashland University degree seeking programs.
The Student Resource Specialist will meet regularly with Justice Involved Students to guide them through their academic journey (pre-enrollment through post degree programming).
This position will assist students with completing online orientation, college readiness assessments, and connecting to appropriate academic resources to successfully complete their academic program.
This position works collaboratively with all Ashland University offices to ensure students have access to needed services.
The Student Resource Specialist will also develop, assess, and teach the Online Student Orientation course, communicate results to appropriate academic departments, and mentor students as needed.
- Responsible for the oversight, direction and management of non-academic processes, programs, assessments and student coaching that guide Justice Involved Students toward college readiness and success.
- Maintains student privacy and record keeping according to the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Enrolls students into and administers Online Orientation Course. Responsible for analyzing results of college readiness assessments (CSI / CSFI) and working with student to develop Readiness Action Plans in conjunction with Professional Academic Advisor.
- Serves as a mentor to justice involved students and assists in formulating success plans for those students experiencing difficulties.
- Guide students in their use of technology (i.e. email, learning management system).
- Facilitate communication between the student and student related offices, (i.e. registrar, financial aid, admission recruiters, testing center, bookstore, tutoring services, academic advising, counseling center, career center).
- Provides training to CE Site Directors on transition procedures and facilitates process from incarcerations to independent online student learning.
- Provides support (resolves student issues, textbooks, exam proctoring, tutoring resources, LMS training, course evaluations and appropriate paperwork).
- Consult regularly with the Director of Academic Services, Director of Admissions, Advising, and Records, Correctional Education Executive Director and the Assistant VP of Correctional Education to formulate plans and strategies to benefit justice involved students.
- Provides regular reports to AU leadership.
- Serve on various campus committees and represent the justice involved students.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Experience working with students in a higher education environment
- Ability to design and implement processes
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
- Strong organizational and prioritization skills
- Ability to meet deadlines and work independently as well as excel on a team
- Commitment to confidentiality
- The ability to work non-traditional hours such as evenings and weekends required
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution
- Experience teaching students at the higher education level
- Experience with Learning Management Systems Blackboard
- Prior experience working in a correctional environment
