What are the responsibilities and job description for the Track Inspector position at ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN RAILROADS?
Primary Duties:
The Track Inspector is required to inspect all segments of the track structure in line with Track Safety Standards and accordance with MxV Rail rules and requirements of test plans. This role involves extensive knowledge of Track Safety Standards, standard track components, and new design components to ensure a safe operation. Verify all identified track maintenance and repairs are handled efficiently. Inspect and operate various special track machinery to support the maintenance, repair, modification, and installation of various track materials and special components. The incumbent reports to the Manager of Operations – Track & Infrastructure but will have minimal supervision. Must be knowledgeable about Track Safety Standards and requirements of test plans. Due to the experimental nature of rail tests, many components are of a new design.
- Inspect railroad track structure for compliance with railroad policy and federal/state regulations.
- Implement remedial action on defects pending repair.
- Repair or direct crews to repair or replace track-structure defects.
- Inspect completed work to verify conformance to government regulations.
- Report findings from inspections in the prescribed format.
- Prepare inspection reports for management and government compliance.
- Know and apply applicable rules, regulations, and policies, or have the ability to learn them.
- Perform special inspections of the track structure in times of severe weather or other events that may damage the railroad.
- Perform other tasks necessary for the efficient operation of the railroad.
- Manage other projects and perform other duties as assigned.
- Perform a visual inspection of the track structure according to the inspector's schedule and in specific cases during rail vehicle operations to ensure the operation's safety.
- Promptly report any defects observed in the prescribed form and work with the Manager of Operations – Track & Infrastructure to prioritize maintenance requirements.
- Must be familiar with all documentation affecting the Track Department and maintenance. Ensure that it is filled out properly, reviewed, and handled.
- Comply with the maintenance and inspection requirements of all active experiments.
- Remove the track from service and stop all operations when the inspection reveals an unsafe condition.
- Understand and comply with all Operating Rules and Safety Procedures.
- Perform the duties of Trackman, Machine Operator, and others when required.
- Communicate and interact with all internal and external customers and co-workers positively and professionally. This position is critical to effective communication.
- May be required to assume some supervisor responsibilities in the absence of the Manager of Operations – Track & Infrastructure.
- May also be required to operate various track machinery safely and cost-effectively to maintain the track properly.
