Auburn University Facilities Management is excited to begin the search for a Utility Services Supervisor! This individual supervises and manages the operations of the water distribution system, gas distribution system, storm and sanitary sewer system, and cartography of the university's utility infrastructure.

Essential Functions
  • Supervises and directs the operation, maintenance, inspection, metering, emergency response, and modification of the natural gas, domestic water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer infrastructure systems.
  • Supervises and directs the locating and GPS collection of all university-owned natural gas, domestic water, sanitary sewer, storm sewer, hot/chilled water, steam, electricity, and communication utilities.
  • Supervises personnel performing cartography and quality assurance of all university utility infrastructure.
  • Reviews plans and specifications from architects/engineers on new construction and renovation of natural gas, domestic water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer systems.
  • Coordinates with and advises engineers, project managers, and other utility personnel concerning decisions affecting the utility infrastructure.
  • Manages financial responsibilities of the utility services department including budgeting, inventory, purchasing materials, hiring contractors, receiving invoices, and billing of labor.
Minimum Qualifications

Education:
High School Diploma or equivalent

Experience:
6 years of experience in installation, maintenance, and repair of utility systems.

Substitutions allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
Minimum Skills, License, and Certifications

Minimum Skills and Abilities
Minimum Required Knowledge
  • Knowledge of utility distribution systems, mostly underground, including domestic water, natural gas, sanitary sewer, and storm water (expertise in all utility types is not required).
  • Familiarity with the execution and importance of underground utility locating.
Minimum Required Skills
  • Ability to lead, manage, and motivate people.
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and written.
  • Ability to interpret schematics, surveys, and maps.
  • Ability to proficiently use a variety of computer and web-based applications including work management software and Microsoft Office.
Desired Knowledge
  • Knowledge of mechanical maintenance and repair practices.
  • Knowledge of construction site safety and excavation best practices.
  • Knowledge of utility metering systems.
  • Familiarity with national and state codes related to utility distribution (DOT, EPA, ADEM, AWWA).
