What are the responsibilities and job description for the Accounting Assistant position at Bangor Water District?
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the Director of Finance, the Accounting Assistant is responsible for payroll and accounts payable operations and activities and performs other related duties in support of accounting and office operations.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Enters all vendor invoices into the financial software and runs edit batches for the Director of Finance to review.
- Processes accounts payable checks and related records for mailing and filing
- Tracks, enters, and bills, when applicable, work performed by District crews, and refers any discrepancies to the Director of Finance.
- Tracks meter inventory changes.
- Assists the Director of Finance with monthly general ledger entries and reconciliations as needed.
- Assists with yearend processes including but not limited to, inventory and audit preparation.
- Receives and processes timecards and enters hours into the payroll software system.
- Runs daily deposits through the remote printer and prepares paper deposits, as necessary.
- Disperses petty cash.
- Assists with front office functions, including but not limited to, answer phones and taking customer payments.
- Assists with human resources paperwork as needed.
- Must get along with others and work in a professional manner.
- Maintains regular, predictable, and reliable attendance.
- Maintains excellent communication and fosters a collaborative working environment with all departments as well as with the public.
- Places an emphasis on safety, efficiency, quality, and productivity.
- Follows all District policies.
- Performs related duty and special projects, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
- Broad-based knowledge of computerized accounting systems including general ledger, payroll, accounts payable, and Microsoft Office
- Knowledge of standard office practices and ability to use office standard office equipment
- Knowledge of office administration and clerical requirements
- Proficient oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
ABILITY TO:
- Maintain confidentiality.

- Maintain effective working relationships with the staff, customers, and other agencies
- Interact with co-workers, customers, the Board of Trustees, and members of the general public in a professional, courteous, effective, and tactful manner, occasionally under confrontational circumstances

- Attend any required or recommended courses or training
RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Associate degree in accounting or the equivalent, preferred.
- Three (3) years or more of Accounting, Bookkeeping or related experience is preferable.
