What are the responsibilities and job description for the Radiation Therapy Tech position at Baptist Health Deaconess Madisonville?
Administers ionizing radiation, maintains treatment records, participates in patient care, maintains equipment, monitors and maintains the treatment environment, and participates in departmental activities.
1. Performs CT Simulation under the direction and supervision of the Radiation Oncologist. Designs and constructs appropriate immobilization devices to ensure accurate treatment set up.
2. Performs machine warm up according to policy.
3. Administers ionizing radiation: Reviews all information prior to patient set up for treatment Conducts an appropriate time out prior to patient treatment and according to policy and procedure, Performs accurate patient set-ups according to MD and dosimetrist’s instructions. Precisely administers radiation treatments according to radiation oncologist’s prescription.
4. Maintains treatment records: Records daily journal entries, photos ,and treatment setup details.
5. Participate in all areas of patient care. Establishes priorities when caring for patients. First Identifies, assesses, and responds to the needs of patients and families. Keeps abreast of status of patient treatment schedules to have field revisions, status checks, new dose calculations, etc., done in a timely manner. Inform and explain to patients of changes in treatment schedules. Organize appointments so patients may come and go in a reasonable timeframe: coordinate inpatient appointments around outpatient appointments. Refer patients and families to oncologists for symptom management and care as needed. Treat patients with respect and confidentiality.
6. Maintains treatment equipment: Performs proper shutdown techniques at end of the work day. Report maintenance problems and needs to Lead Therapist/Physicist and Director, and contact Varian Uptime.
7. Monitors and maintains treatment area: Maintains treatment area cleanliness. Maintains linen levels in treatment and dressing areas. Maintains supplies needed in treatment rooms.
8. Reports patient concerns, illnesses, untoward side effects etc. to the Radiation RN and/or Radiation Oncologist.
9. Provides appropriate hand off with inpatient nurses and patient transport.
10. Provides appropriate patient education for CT Sim and Radiation Therapy prior to and throughout treatment/procedure.
11. Assists in teaching students when they are assigned to the department
12. Develops programs to attain personal goals and participate in educational activities to insure further professional growth
13. Community Service: Participate in a minimum of one event per year as needed.
Minimum Education/Licensure:
- Certification by the Kentucky Board of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (KBIMRT)
- Certification as a radiologic technologist qualified in radiation therapy (RTT) by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) OR graduate of an approved radiation therapy school or equivalent if certified prior to 2017.
Experience: 1 Yr preferred
