Job Summary:
The Mental Health Tech functions as a member of the health care team.
The MHT assists the registered nurse in meeting the goal(s) of individualized patient care by performing designated patient care and unit activities.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Provides complete verbal reports with appropriate information. Effectively communicates to other care providers/team member’s necessary information. Responds and reports promptly to customer requests. Functions as team member, assisting health care team as needed.

Provides patient care. Bathing patient. Assists patient in range of motion exercises (passive or active). Performs morning, afternoon, and evening care. Positions, turns and ambulates patient. Assists patient with mobility needs. Changes bed linens of occupied and unoccupied beds. Performs finger stick blood sugars. Provides skin care. Prepares patients for physical exam and assists when directed.
3.
Keeps patient room and hallways free of clutter. Disposes of soiled linen in appropriate container. Keeps nursing station clean and neat. Cleans equipment per policy and stores in appropriate area.
4.
Performs professional responsibilities. Adheres to Nursing Department dress code. Attendance at mandatory in-services, unit meetings in accordance with department guidelines.
5.
Communicates with others in completing work assignments and accomplishing department/unit goals. Utilizes appropriate channels of communication. Communicates any pertinent data in regards to patient condition to appropriate RN.
6.
Performs Catheter care. Performs perineal care. Uses lifts for patient transfers when indicated. Takes vital signs, including VAS#, and records in electronic medical record.
Makes patient rounds every 15 minutes, visualizing each patient in their setting. Frequency may increase dependent upon patient status and unit standards. Measures and records weights. Initiates and follows High Risk Fall Precautions as indicated. Follows Suicide Precautions when applicable.
7.
Empties drains, catheters, drainage tubes. Calculates intake and output. Collects, labels, and routes specimens. Performs pulse oximetry as directed. Feeds patients as indicated. Provides nourishments as directed. Passes fresh water every shift and as needed.
8.
Assists patient with elimination needs. Prepares and administers enemas. Incontinence care. Performs care for established colostomies and ileostomies. Removes Foley. Application and monitoring of restrictive devices.
9.
Maintains up to date annual Core and Nursing Department Competency requirements
10.
Maintains up to date BLS Certification
11.
Adheres to all hospital and department specific policies, procedures, guidelines, and protocols.
12.
Performs unit safety sweep during shift hand-off.
13.
Assists nursing staff in maintaining a safe working environment.
14.
Participates in leading patient group(s).
Minimum Education, Experience, Training, and Licensures Required:
High School Diploma or G.E.D. required. Successful completion of Nurse Aide training program required. Certified Nurse Aide certification through the Kentucky Board of Nursing required. BCLS required. Work violence training required after hire, not to exceed 3 months, and maintained annually. Training provided in-house.
EXPERIENCE: 1 years’ experience in a recent hospital setting or skilled setting required. Prior inpatient psychiatric care preferred.
