Barrie School seeks candidates for the 2022-23 school year for the position of Head of Middle & Upper School, with employment beginning on July 1, 2022. Candidates must have a minimum of five or more years of full-time teaching/teacher coaching experience and five or more years of full-time administrative experience. Bachelor's degree required, masters or doctorate preferred.

Established in 1932 as one of the first integrated educational institutions in the DC region, Barrie School cultivates intrinsic motivation in students through a progressive and collaborative approach to education. The school currently serves over 360 students in two divisions: Barrie Lower School (with a Montessori curriculum for age 1-Grade 5) and Barrie Middle & Upper School (with a Project Based Learning curriculum for Grades 6-12).

About the Position and Qualifications
Joining Barrie School during an exciting time, the Head of Middle & Upper School should feel a passion for implementing a program informed by leading-edge, research-based pedagogical thinking. The division Head will have the opportunity to collaborate on engaging, intellectually stimulating work that will help shape the future of the school while respecting its foundations.
This full-time position will report to the Head of School and will be a member of the Senior Administrative Team.
The Head of Middle and Upper School will work with a diverse group of administrators and teachers and forge a strong partnership with the Head of Lower School. This includes being part of discussions regarding the School’s policies and strategic path, leading efforts to continually refine and improve curriculum, teaching, and learning practices across the school, managing the Middle & Upper School budget and finances with the Business Office, and supporting the continuation of a strong before and after-care program, and summer program.
Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and will include a robust vacation package and tuition remission for school-age children at Barrie School. In addition, staff housing adjacent to campus may be available at a significantly reduced rate.
Candidates should possess the ability to work with individual teachers to provide thoughtful guidance and feedback on teaching and to collaborate on crafting professional development. We welcome candidates with backgrounds in public and private school settings.
