Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse (RN) I, Acute Care – Radiology will work Full Time, Days and is accountable for the delivery of safe patient care utilizing the nursing process.

  • The Radiology Registered Nurse assesses, plans, delivers, coordinates, integrates and evaluates nursing care related to patient needs before, during and after Ultrasound, MRI and CT interventional procedures.
  • The Radiology RN contributes to the support of patients through interdisciplinary teamwork.
  • The Radiology RN must be able to assess patients’ status at all times and demonstrate skills necessary to provide age-appropriate care to patients.

Provides nursing care to all of the patients receiving radiological procedures including invasive x-ray procedures, Ultrasound, CT scans and MRI scans.

  • The Registered Nurse prepares room for next procedure, assuring all necessary supplies and equipment are available, with no more than 3-4 exceptions per year as measured by the lead nurses observation.
  • Provides information to the Radiologists based on assessment data and information received from the referring physician 100% of the time.
  • Plans nursing care based on the established Radiology invasive procedure policy and practice 98% of the time as noted by the lead nurse.
  • Under the supervision of the Radiologist, demonstrates the ability and skills to manage the care of patients during and after an invasive x-ray procedure 98% of the time.
  • Performs IV injections, IV access lines, and injections of non-ionic contrast media material, and medication for a variety of imaging examinations 98% of the time as observed by the lead nurse.
  • Applies nursing skills during intricate interventional procedures to assist the Radiologist with the proper placement of guidewires and catheters 98% of the time as noted by the Radiologist.
  • Anticipates emergency situations and is always prepared to utilize emergency life support techniques in accordance with each modality’s policies and procedures 100% of the time as noted by the lead nurse.
  • Works independently in their assigned weekly rotation in each area within Radiology 95% of the time as noted by the lead nurse.
  • Documents all aspects of pre, post and intra-procedure care on required paperwork 90-95% of the time as measured by random QA checks by lead nurse.
  • Monitors patient’s response to medication, vital signs and level of consciousness and communicates any issues to the Radiologists 100% of the time with no more than 2-3 exceptions per year as observed by the lead nurse.
  • Acts as a mentor to new Radiology nurses, teaching specifics of interventional procedures and reports progress and problems to the lead nurse 95% of the time.
  • Educates patients and family on procedures prior to the procedure as observed by the lead nurse 95% of the time.

Advocates for patients to ensure that care preserves and protects the patient’s autonomy, dignity and rights.

  • The Registered Nurse delivers care in a non-judgmental and non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to patient diversity, 100% of the time as noted in patient surveys.
  • Assures that patients have informed consent signed for indicated invasive procedures, 100% of the time as measured by the lead nurse and Radiologists.

Shares information with patients and with co-workers promptly and accurately.

  • Keep patients informed of their status at 15-minute intervals, as measured by the lead nurse and patient surveys.
  • Informs Radiologist immediately 90-95% of the time when patient is ready for procedure as measured by the lead nurse and the Radiologists feedback.
  • Conducts pre-procedure chart reviews, communicating pertinent information to Radiologists 95% of the time with no more than 2-3 exceptions per year as observed by the Radiologists feedback.

Acquires and maintains current knowledge and skills in his or her area of practice

  • Provides proof of current licensure validation to supervisor. (To achieve excellence, one must do this in a proactive, timely manner prior to due date)
  • Completes required radiology credentialing according to departmental policy by providing documented evidence of completion to supervisor.
  • Provides to supervisor evidence of completion of all required training and competency validation.  (To achieve excellence, one must take personal responsibility for this task and complete by the due date)
  • Participates in level appropriate number of hours of educational activity, according to pathway, related to job function annually and provides documented evidence of attendance or activity to supervisor.

Participates in nursing research

  • Commits to an attitude of inquiry, research based practice, and the advancement of nursing science as observed by managerial observation.
  • Helps to identify clinical problems requiring investigation as measured by co-worker feedback and managerial observation.
  • Assists in the collection of data within a structured format as measured by co-worker feedback and managerial observation.

Demonstrates financial accountability including efficient use of resources and understanding of appropriate and compliant billing.

  • Demonstrates understanding of value of equipment and takes appropriate care when handling sensitive equipment 95% of the time with no more than 1-2 exceptions per year as observed by the lead nurse.
  • Minimizes waste of costly interventional supplies by ensuring that older supplies are used in advance of newer supplies in conjunction with the angiography technologists  90% if the time as observed by lead nurse. 

Assumes responsibility for continuing education by maintaining competency in and up to date in nursing practice.

  • Attends 75-80% of all offered continuing education programs pertinent to the maintenance and development of expertise related to area of practice as observed by the lead nurse.
  • Attends 90-95% of all department meetings  and  reviews and documents that they have reviewed the minutes of missed meetings as observed by the manager.
  • Attends all mandatory in-services programs or documents review of required material as documented on annual in-services record.
  • Completes required credentialing for the upkeep of all necessary licensures such as BLS licensure 100% of the time.

Follows hospital procedures on required drug and equipment counts.

  • The Registered Nurse accounts for all drug usage and storage 100% of the time on a daily basis as observed by the lead nurse.
  • Assures completion of a daily check of Crash Cart 95% of the time as observed by the lead nurse. 

Other Duties as Assigned.


Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduation from a Baccalaureate, Associate OR Diploma Professional Nursing program is required.

Licensure/Certificates:

  • NYS licensure as Registered Nurse or valid interim permit must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
  • BLS certification or equivalent must be obtained within 30 days from start date.
  • ACLS certification or equivalent must be obtained within 60 days from start date.

 

Experience:

  • New graduate OR less than 1 year experience as an RN.

 

Skills:

  • Ability to assess patient status and take appropriate action is required.
  • Demonstrates competency in required nursing skills relevant to area of practice.
  • Ability to multi-task effectively in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Acquire skills to administer moderate sedation within 6 week orientation period.
  • Ability to participated in “on-call” shifts after 6 week orientation period.

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Walking, standing, squatting and kneeling required throughout the shift.
  • Ability to lift and position patients required.
  • Category I risk exposure as defined by OSHA.
  • Must be able to identify and differentiate colors.
