Berkshire School Berkshire School seeks to hire a Director of Counseling beginning in the 2022-2023 academic year. The ideal candidate will be a licensed mental health clinician, psychologist or social worker who has been licensed for more than three years (Ph.D., PsyD, LICSW, LMHC). Successful candidates will have substantial experience with school consultation or school counseling, mental health best practice and policy and procedure, as well as the clinical treatment of adolescents and families. The candidate should have knowledge of long and short term evidence-based treatment modalities, experience in mental health crisis response and thorough safety assessment, and experience as a clinical supervisor. They will have leadership and collaboration skills, a strong work ethic, and an ability to effectively work and multi-task in a vibrant residential school environment. Candidates must have excellent interpersonal skills, an ability to work collaboratively and independently, as well as a passion for working with teenagers. Candidates must possess a demonstrated understanding of current diversity, equity, and inclusion practices and a growth mindset.
Berkshire School has a three-person Counseling team that works collaboratively to provide an inclusive, equitable counseling practice, mental health workshops for students, and relevant training to student peer counselors.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Providing oversight of the day to day operations of the counseling office and individual and group clinical supervision for the counseling team.
- Leading the counseling team in culturally appropriate, consultative, clinical, and outreach services grounded in multicultural frameworks and treatment modalities to students in grades 9-PG, consulting to parents about their children, referring students for treatment outside of Berkshire School in coordination with their parents.
- Communicating and coordinating with Student Health, Student Life, Form Deans, and other administrators to coordinate support for student mental health.
- Leading department meetings and creating systems as needed, including oversight of counseling office policy and operational procedure, response protocol for students in crisis, counseling and on-call schedule, and expanding the school’s referral network.
- Serving on and coordinating a rotating on-call system for mental health emergencies for weeknights/weekends, including providing assistance and supervision to other counselors taking the lead in responding to a clinical emergency.
- Communicating with faculty/staff members related to concerns about student mental health and the best ways to support them.
- Consultation with the school’s consulting psychiatrist and working knowledge of psychopharmacological medications.
- Providing workshops and presentations to students, faculty/staff related to mental health and protocols.
- Serving on the Health and Wellness Committee charged with the design and implementation of wellness programming.
