Job Title: Research Assistant in Vaccine Research Lab
On-site work, 40 hours/week, over-time available, unable to sponsor visas.
Job Summary:
In a vaccine research department studying several diseases including COVID-19, HIV, Zika, and Tuberculosis, under general supervision of the Principal Investigator & Immunology Manager, conducts a variety of routine and specialized laboratory tests using molecular, cell biology and/or biochemistry techniques. Performs specific assays of human & non-human primate rodent specimens in the laboratory following standard operating procedures. Performs quality control analysis and interpretation. Performs lab procedures with speed, precision, and understanding of theory behind tests and procedures. Performs Level I responsibilities with a higher level of problem resolution, analytical ability, and self-direction.
Essential Responsibilities:
Performs routine laboratory tests i.e. blood and tissue processing, cell culture, immunoassays such as ELISA, ELISPOT, cellular staining, etc.
Follows GxP (GCLP) standards as defined by different national and international organizations when appropriate for clinical or preclinical studies.
Produces results that meet established departmental standards for accuracy and precision with minimal repetition or problems.
Verifies validity of results prior to reporting by observing established quality control criteria.
Using analytical abilities and sound judgment, makes decisions regarding the reliability and accuracy of results, repeating procedures when necessary.
May prepare written and/or verbal reports on status of research and the technical procedures used, including statistical and graphic summaries of findings and possible conclusions.
May operate and maintain moderate to complex lab equipment such as spectrophotometer, multiplex, flow cytometer, etc.
May write/review standard operating procedures for assay, equipment, safety.
Adheres to the laboratory's safety policies.
Hours vary based on assignments and laboratory need.
Expectations:
Knowledge of biochemistry, hematology, immunology, serology, lab procedures and principles preferred. Organizational ability and time management is demonstrated. Ability to work with others, at all levels within the organization, and collaborate effectively. Able to communicate positively, effectively, respectfully and professionally with others. Must be a team player to all groups, confidential of sensitive data, and accountable for work output. Detail oriented. Ability to plan/organize technical work and manage workload to service multiple requests and tasks at one time, while maintaining quality and a professional manner. Must work calmly and respond courteously when under pressure; accept direction. Must be assertive and consistent in following and/or enforcing policies. Able to reason and solve problems effectively, analyze and interpret data. Self-motivated and works well with minimal direction.
Competencies:
Written Communications: Ability to read, and write in English in order to understand basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisor/manager; communicate effectively with co-workers; and respond to basic questions.
Oral Communications: Ability to understand spoken English in order to follow basic safety instructions and take direction from supervisor/manager; communicate effectively in basic English with co-workers in response to routine questions.
Knowledge: Ability to demonstrate basic knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices and procedures with the ability to use them in routine situations. Specialized knowledge not required.
Customer Service: Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude and respond to requests in a timely and respectful manner.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree required in Life Sciences or related scientific field.
1-3 years related work experience required.
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience or a Master’s degree with requisite knowledge and skills.
Experience with computer systems required, including web based applications and Microsoft Office applications which may include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint or Access.
Physical Nature of the Job:
Light work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force frequently to move objects. Some elements of the job are sedentary, but the employee will be required to stand for periods of time or move throughout the hospital campus.
