Job Summary
Our Clinical Veterinarian provides veterinary procedures that supports all aspects of veterinary care for the company’s animal care program. The Clinical Veterinarian assists the Attending Veterinarian in the oversight of the animal care and use program. Clinical Veterinarians may supervise or oversee veterinary staff and manage the activities of the assigned program(s) to ensure effective performance.
Responsibilities
- Oversee daily animal care program including the Non-Human Primate Environmental Enhancement Program (PEEP).
- Perform veterinary rounds as scheduled, and provide clinical care and preventive medicine support.
- Direct day–to-day oversight of the animal care and use program including, but not limited to:
- Ensure that all animal care related activities are conducted in accordance with company policies, guidelines, and SOPs, and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards and regulations
- Ensure that documentation requirements are met
- Institute the use of appropriate methods to prevent, control, diagnose, and treat diseases and injuries
- Provide expertise and consultation on matters of animal health and welfare, including, but not limited to: the use of proper anesthesia and analgesia in laboratory animals; recognition and training for treatment of in the relief of pain and distress; review of the plans for appropriate and timely medical intervention
- Ensure daily observation of all animals by personnel to assess their health and well-being
- Conduct routine Physical Examinations (PE) and the testing of non-human primates for tuberculosis (TB)
- Provide expertise and consultation on matters regarding animal and personnel health status-control program including, but not limited to: vaccinations, safety programs, zoonosis control, euthanasia methods, and other appropriate provisions related to animal research
- Assist the Attending Veterinarian in oversight of quarantine program which includes participation in vendor management, e.g. reviewing vendor health information, communicating specific issues related to shipments to them, tracking overall vendor performance, as applicable.
- May serve as the back-up Attending Veterinarian for all areas of the animal care and use program.
- May assist in management of the activities of assigned program, including supervising veterinary staff and the training for veterinary technicians/staff. Ensure that training is properly documented and regularly updated as necessary.
- May perform surgical support and provide anesthesia, surgical and analgesic technical expertise/advice.
- May serve on the Institutional Animal Care and Use (IACUC) as a member and the back-up Veterinarian Reviewer for IACUC proposals and amendments.
- Provide emergency coverage and on weekends and holidays, as scheduled, for the care of animals.
- Participate in the development and implementation of company policies, state and federal regulations and other assignments required to support the animal care program
- Remain current on new and revised study protocols, animal care, treatments, etc.
- Complies with all regulatory guidelines, occupation health as well as health and safety programs, in accordance with company policies and procedures.
- Performs other duties as required.
Education and Experience Requirements:
- Required: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Licensed to practice in MA)
- Preferred: CRO industry experience and ability to manage high volume, fast paced client projects
- Experience leading teams, strong communication skills, results driven
