Job Description
The Surgical Progressive Care Unit (163PCU) is a 19-bed unit that provides monitoring and treatment of adult surgical patients. Patients may include any surgical patient who does not require ICU level care, but who requires a higher level of critical care than is provided on a general nursing division. This can include post-operative complications, sepsis, respiratory distress, vasopressor/antihypertensive management, insulin gtt management, antiarrhythmic medication management, and other conditions requiring frequent monitoring/intervention.
Primary service:
Abdominal Transplant (TXP): kidney, liver, pancreas transplant surgery
Hepatobiliary Surgery (HPB): liver resection, whipple, partial/total pancreatectomy, etc.
Ear/Nose/Throat (ENT) Surgery: fresh tracheostomy, fresh laryngectomy, free flap, mandibulectomy, glossectomy, etc.
Plastics Surgery (PRS) & Ortho Microsurgery: digital/limb replant, flaps, leech therapy, nerve transfers, etc.
TERTIARY service:
General Surgery/Trauma/Geriatric Trauma (ACCS): GSW, MVC polytrauma, assault victims, TBI, total care patients (para/quads), SDH s/p falls, emergent VHR, etc.
Orthopedic Surgery (ORTHO): spinal fusion, limb reconstruction, total hip replacements, etc.
12 HOUR sHIFTS:
Day shift: 0630 – 1900
Night shift: 1830 – 0700
WEEKEND ROTATION:
Patterned in every 3rd weekend (hospital policy) to ensure safe/appropriate staffing ratios and peer support
Primary Care = 100% nursing staff at the bedside
2-3 nurse to patient ratio
All patients are hardwired to central monitors for frequent and continuous assessment

163PCU is a 19 bed surgical progressive care unit. The patient population is comprised of acutely ill surgical patients requiring a higher level of nursing care and monitoring. This unit primarily cares for post-op patients admitted to the Abdominal Transplant, Hepatobiliary Surgery, ENT/Plastics Surgery and Ortho-micro Surgery teams. Secondary, this unit manages critical care needs for patients admitted to the Trauma/ACCS/Geriatric Trauma Surgery teams, Orthopedic-Spine/Recon/Hand etc. teams as well as Vascular Surgery and other overflow teams.

Role Purpose
Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.
Responsibilities
- Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
- Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate patient's physical, psychosocial and emotional needs.
- Develops and implements individual plans of care in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care.
- Evaluates patient's response and modifies plan of care accordingly throughout the patient's stay.
- Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
