Key Responsibilities:
The Rodman/ Chainman assists in specialized field survey work. Position is characterized by assignments requiring experience and knowledge where duties are performed. Persons in this class are responsible for reading and using modern surveying and measuring instruments, recording and preparing survey notes, and other notes that may be required during the course of the survey.
Primary Duties:
- At the direction of the Chief of Party or Instrumentman, the Rodman/ Chainman sets out or observes a distance or direction to a predefined point or object. This work is done by either mechanical measurement such as calibrated steel measurement tape, or electronically by means of prism reflection.
- Records field notes, both written and electronic.
- Care for, maintains, calibrates, and adjusts precision surveying instruments
- Carries out all survey activities in accordance with specific instructions and required safety policies.
- Read and interprets right of way maps, construction plans, survey notes, design plans, and other relevant technical information.
- Maintains all assigned vehicles so that they are all at times fully operable, safe, and neat in appearance.
Requirements:
- Completion of required courses and training hours stipulated by the Northern California Joint Apprenticeship Party Chief Training Program.
- At least 2 years (4,000 work hours) of qualifying field experience, as defined by Northern California Joint Apprenticeship Committee
