Black Girls Do Stem is a new and growing non-profit that seeks to change the face of the STEM industry. The BGDSTEM day program offers middle school aged black girls hands-on opportunities to explore stem careers across various industries. Team members share a deeply-held shared passion for a new normal when there is an equitable representation of black women across all STEM fields. BGDSTEM offers the opportunity for team members to lay the foundation for expansion and grow within the organization as leaders in their functional areas and collaborative stakeholders in continuous improvement.
About the Position:
Black Girls Do STEM utilizes a cadre of Program Facilitators to deliver exceptional learning experiences and develop strong relationships with participants. Under the direction and guidance of the Program Manager, each Program Facilitator will implement and help drive curiosity in the minds of Black girls, building confidence, skills, and the future STEM workforce. They should expect to engage in group professional development with other Program Facilitators on Saturdays in October, November and January. From February-September they will independently review and plan for sessions, deliver content to students on Saturdays and receive 1:1 coaching from the Program Manager in post-delivery debrief and analysis sessions.
This is a part-time, non-exempt role with a combination of training, preparation and Saturday program delivery. Program Facilitators will be expected to work 15-20 hours per month October-November and January-September.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Learning and Development
- Internalize, reflect and build on the Black Girls Do STEM’s commitment to equity during professional development sessions
- Build community with other Program Facilitator’s and Black Girls Do STEM staff
- Participate in professional development to build content knowledge and prepare for STEM session delivery across the program year
Program Delivery and Relationship Building
- Deliver targeted, inspiring STEM workshops
- Build meaningful mentoring relationships with program participants and drive a commitment to Black Girls Do STEM in the short-term and path towards a STEM career in the long-term
- Reflect on program delivery and engage in reflective, goal driven coaching sessions with the Program Manager
- Assess program strengths and identify areas of improvement, offering insight and feedback to Program Director for sustaining relevant, effective, and engaging programs
Qualifications
- Strong belief in Black Girls Do STEM’s mission, including the importance of equity in a STEM education
- Some post-secondary education and work experience supporting Black communities
- A minimum 2 years of experience in community-based youth programming or school-based setting
- Track record of building empowering relationships, demonstrating empathy and building rapport with middle school Black girls
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Desire to work independently and as part of a team
