HVRP- Veteran Employment Specialist
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The HVRP- Veteran Employment Specialist (VES) works with homeless veterans throughout the five boroughs of NYC placing eligible clients into stable employment and housing. The Employment Specialist will utilize Best Practices: to assess the client's basic needs, make referrals as deemed appropriate, and monitor each client's progress and retention.
Preference will be given to individuals with a background in homeless services and to honorably discharged veterans.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Fulfill contract employment-related goals and housing placement goals per month by-
Assessing client's education, work experience, skills, abilities, qualifications, and job interest.
- Assessing clients' readiness for job referral, classroom training, on-the-job training, and /or support services: assess and ascertain clients' employability, and match clients with available employment training, or other opportunities/services.
- Identifying problems/barriers that hinder employability: assist clients in resolving any barriers to employment training, or other opportunities/ services.
- Act as a liaison with public and private employers to develop on-the-job training and/or direct job placement sites for clients.
- Maintain cooperative relationships with employers, educational and vocational training institutions, support service, and Community resources agencies; identifies appropriate job placement/training opportunities for clients.
- Maintain awareness of appropriate of the local job market and opportunities to assist in guiding clients: arrange for employment interviews, attend job fairs, conduct special workshops, and presentations, or perform other training and outreach activities.
- Act as Liaison with other department managers, and the New York State Department of labor to develop the growth of employment opportunities.
KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:
- Associates degree preferred, or equivalent experience with proof of ability to perform effective case management.
- Experience working with a workforce Development Program.
- Must be able to work independently with limited supervision.
SKILLS AND ATTITUDES REQUIRED:
- Honorable Military Discharge
- Interest in helping veterans reach their full potential.
- Ability to work well with Veterans, homeless, diverse, and wide range of people.
- Ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel spreadsheets, and client-centered databases.
- Ability to handle confidential information.
- Ability to process a large volume of paperwork
- Have and maintain a positive work attitude
