The Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa is a non-profit organization and home to more than 2,800 animals representing nearly 240 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish, and is fully accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. The mission of the Blank Park Zoo is to inspire an appreciation of the natural world through conservation, education, research and recreation.
Position Purpose
The Membership Desk Lead is positioned at the Membership Desk in the admissions lobby, and is responsible for sales of memberships both in person and over the phone, assisting all guests with questions and concerns, occasional database entry and management, and providing backup support for guest services staff.
Essential Functions

- Process sales of memberships, donations, behind-the-scenes tours and other daily transactions.
- Answer the membership hotline, membership emails (on the weekends) and general reception line to assist guests with questions.
- Assist members in inquiries regarding digital membership cards, upgrades, and all other membership related issues.
- Assist in leading Behind-the-Scenes tours.
- Provide backup support to front admissions staff with checking guests in and selling tickets.
- Occasionally enter online membership sales or combo sales sent from SCI and LHF.
- Occasionally assist with Community Presence Events.
- Assist with donation calls and pick-up pertaining to fundraising events.
- Assist with Member Events – this includes set up, tear down, check in and clean up.
- Assist manager in other special tasks and projects as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned related to the overall success of the Development Department.
- Must be competent in cash handling, making change, computer literacy, and understand basic software (Word, Excel, Google Drive, etc.)

Work Environment
While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit and work at a desk for extended periods of time, stand, walk, and utilize manual dexterity to use computer mouse and keyboard and other office equipment. The incumbent may be exposed to loud noise and may be required to be outside for brief periods of time.

Required education and experience
- POS and cash handing experience.
- Intermediate word processing skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office required.

Additional eligibility requirements
- Must be able to maintain work hours that will serve the needs of the Blank Park Zoo including occasional nights and weekends.
- Must be able to maintain a calm and professional demeanor in all situations such as emergencies or guest interactions.
Licenses/Certifications
- First Aid/CPR Training or ability to obtain.
