What are the responsibilities and job description for the Corporate Controller position at Block Engineering?
Block Engineering is a developer of lasers and chemical detection systems for Safety, Security, and Life Science applications. Block is the proud winner of two Photonics West Prism Awards and the Milipol Paris Innovation Award. Block is headquartered in Southborough, Massachusetts in the greater Boston metro area.
Block operates two companies: Block Engineering develops and sells commercial products, and Block MEMS is an R&D development company executing contracts with the U.S. Federal Government. Block MEMS has an accounting system that conforms to government DCAA requirements.
Block is seeking a Corporate Controller to lead all financial and accounting functions for Block, including financial planning, control, analysis, budgeting and reporting.
Responsibilities will include:
- Develop and monitor accounting policies and procedures to guide corporate financial decisions.
- Evaluate and enhance financial controls and tax return procedures.
- Lead financial and accounting functions for Block to manage financial operations, including cost-savings initiatives, financial planning, and presentation of management reports.
- Oversee financial and accounting staff and coordinate with all departments in Block for data required to budget, analyze and evaluate profit center performance metrics.
- Assist with federal government development contracts and proposals, including preparation and submission of required financial information. Serve as the financial liaison to government agencies.
- Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, and various other accounting functions.
- Generate annual budget and forecast updates with comparisons of budget and actual results.
- Coordinate and provide necessary documents to Block’s external CPA firm for audit, tax return preparation and year end physical inventory count.
- Coordinate with manufacturing team on reports including inventory valuation, discarded scrap, obsolete inventory.
- Manage state-level sales/use tax and out-of-state sales tax return submissions.
- Coordinate with human resources on 401(k), PTO, and new hire set up.
- Manage all payroll functions.
- Assist with ERP implementation process and use.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in accounting. Master’s degree and CPA or CMA preferred.
- Experience in a manufacturing firm and cost control required.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP required.
- Minimum of 5 years in a financial or accounting executive position. Past experience as a Controller preferred.
- Experience managing an accounting team and working with manufacturing, engineering, technology and sales teams.
- Experience working with government contracts a plus. Experience with the Defense Contract Audit Agency (DCAA) would be ideal.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work with multiple teams across the company.
