What are the responsibilities and job description for the Director of Nursing position at Bloomfield West?

The prime function of the Director of Nursing is to plan, organize and direct the administration of nursing service in accordance with the objectives of the ICF-DD. The Director of Nursing may also be assigned other administrative areas of responsibility when necessary.
EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Graduation from an accredited school.
At least three years of professional nursing experience.
Possession of a valid license as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of California.
The ability to lead, plan and supervise the work of others.
An interest, experience, and enthusiasm for, or specialized training in Developmentally disabled individuals.
A sense of organization, diplomacy, integrity and fairness.
Good judgment and the ability to set priorities and follow through with difficult tasks when needed.
Current knowledge of medicine.
Ability to teach.
Ability to establish effective relationships with physicians, CDPH licensing, SCLARC representatives, clients and fellow workers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Screen patients for admission with the assistance of the QIDP and Social Service Designeeto ensure that the facility only admits those patients for whom it can provide adequate care.
  • Hires personnel for licensed nursing service including their evaluation, promotion and dismissal.
  • Evaluate work standards and counsel when needed.
  • Organizes nursing service and keeps time schedules and incident reports.
  • Defines duties and establishes patterns of delegated authority and responsibility.
  • Supervises and evaluates work standards.
  • Develops routine inservice programs for licensed nurses. Uses these to translate current administrative directives to staff.
  • Develops a staffing pattern to meet needs of patients on a 24 hour basis that discourages overtime.
  • Handles personnel problems and complaints concerning nursing service with fairness and tact.
  • Arranges for, and participates in In-service education and on the job training.
  • Establishes and maintains a manual of general nursing policies and specific procedures.
  • Establishes supervisory control for the administration of all medications and treatments.
  • Makes rounds and assists physicians.
  • Promotes good employee patient relationships.
  • Attends and participates in professional meetings.
  • Works with administration on establishing personnel practices.
  • Consults with the Administrator and QIDP on a regular basis concerning the capabilities or deficiencies noted in members of her staff.
  • Assist in the administration of the facility during the absence of Administrator and QIDP.
  • Assists Administrator in initiation of new programs.
  • Correlates nursing services with other services such as dietary, plant maintenance and office management.
  • Conducts themself at all times as an example of professional ethics and decorum.
  • Supervises patient care plan completion and implementation.
  • Prepare nursing reports.
  • Complete medical review team forms every quarter.
  • Assist QIDP with Psychiatrist assessment and medication changes.
  • Monthly assignments for nursing summaries and follow up.
  • Monitor routine body checks and lists of the same.
  • Cover shifts for RN’s LVN’s as needed.
  • Order and review medical records complete changes needed on audits.
  • Correct Pharmacy reviews.
  • Assumes responsibility for requisition, inventory and safe keeping of medical supplies and equipment.
  • Evaluates employee Workman's Compensation claims and provides in setting up first aid or sending to Industrial Clinic.
  • Determines necessary client appointments
  • Assist the Medical staff and the Professional Advisory Group in the development and revisions of patient care policies.
  • Investigate any incidents along with the Department Head and follow up with needed actions.
  • Shall be responsible for informing the Department of Health via incident report within 24 hours of any unusual occurrence.
  • Review and discuss departmental issues with Pharmacist, Dietitian, Lab and X-ray company.
