JOB DESCRIPTION FOR COOK
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Ability to follow oral and written directions.
2. Preferred previous experience in an institutional setting
3. Knowledge of food preparation, sanitation, and hygienic methods.
4. Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more and be able to walk alone, turn, pivot and bend as needed to perform all of the duties listed under “Work Performed” of this job description.
5. Demonstrate a working knowledge of Universal Precautions and the rules that govern hazardous waste and products and Blood Borne Pathogens.
JOB SUMMARY: The purpose of this position is to cook adequate and nutritious meals as specified by menus. RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Handling and preparation of food.
2. Meeting meal schedules.
3. Avoiding food waste.
4. Care of equipment.
5. Preparation of food that is palatable and appetizing in appearance.
6. Work cooperatively with other staff and departments.
7. Follow all rules regarding hazardous products.
SPECIAL DEMANDS:
1. Willingness to work for best interest of institution.
2. Ability to work cooperatively with others.
3. Initiative and judgment in setting up meals, utilizing left-overs.
4. Follow standard recipes but make independent decisions in line with current experience.
JOB KNOWLEDGE:
1. Cook a variety of foods in large quantities.
2. Hazards of improper food handling.
3. Use and care of food service equipment.
4. Familiarity with seasoning and cooking time required.
5. Cooking characteristics of various cuts of meat.
6. Estimate quantities of food required.
WORK PERFORMED:
1. Prepare foodstuffs for cooking, which includes lifting food products and trays of food, which weight 50 pounds or more to and from the steam table and other surfaces as desired.
2. Prepare food according to recipes.
3. Plan cooking schedules for readiness at mealtime.
4. Cook food.
5. Prepare and apportion servings.
