This Bridge Operator position is a Guaranteed Rotating Extra Board (GREB) role, requiring on-call availability to cover shifts when permanently assigned employees are absent. This position is a part of the Engineering department which plays a crucial role in supporting both day-to-day operations and long-term strategic projects, contributing to the overall success and growth of BNSF Railway.
This position is On Call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, including nights, weekends, and holidays. Guaranteed 40 hours per week.
Travel is minimal.
Training for this position is company-paid on-the-job training.
Key responsibilities may include any of the following assignments on a shift:
Bridge Operator will monitor and direct marine and railroad traffic around a lift bridge, raise and lower the bridge as needed, grant trackage rights for maintenance crews and personnel, protect personnel and equipment during train movements. Additionally operate railroad and marine radios and phones, communicate with the Dispatching Office and Trainmasters for proper train movement, relay USCG information to barge traffic, perform administrative tasks such as ordering supplies and preparing reports, and carry out basic janitorial duties to maintain a clean work area.
Typing Requirement for this position is a minimum rate of 25 wpm. Candidates must pass a BNSF-arranged typing test.
Daily work is conducted in a safety sensitive environment where the working conditions can include diverse and extreme weather conditions (hot, cold, rain, snow, and sleet), walking and performing work on uneven surfaces, working around loud noises, fumes, and heavy/moving machinery.

Basic Qualifications:
- Able to work in the US without company sponsorship now AND in the future.
- At least 18 years of age or will be by the start date listed above.
- Valid, state-issued driver’s license
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to report for duty at the designated work location.
- Able to work safely in the above working conditions.
- Able to work the above shift/hours.
- Ability to meet the above typing requirement.
- Ability to read, write and communicate (speak, hear and understand) English.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds.
- Ability to visually distinguish colors - red, blue, green, yellow and lunar (clear light).
- Ability to differentiate between verbal and non-verbal sounds (signals, alarms, etc.) and discriminate (comprehend) verbal communication in the work environment.
- Ability to identify, interpret and use hand signals from near and far and visually judge the speed and distance of moving objects.
- Ability to use hands and hand tools to perform activities involving holding, grasping, turning and pulling.
- Ability to bend, walk, stand and sit for several hours with breaks.
- Able to perform work on uneven surfaces, including frequently climbing ladders and on/off equipment.
- Follow safety policies and procedures and wear the required personal protective equipment required for the job in a safe manner.
- Basic-level skills in Microsoft Office Suite programs (i.e., Excel, Outlook, Word) with prior experience using Microsoft Office Suite programs in either a professional or academic setting.
Union membership is with the Transportation Communications Union (TCU) and union dues are required per union agreement.
