The mission of the Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) is to protect, preserve, and promote the health and well-being of all Boston residents, particularly the most vulnerable. PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Centers for Disease Control recently funded an Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) Project at Boston Public Health Commission, implementing over the next 5 years. The grant expands and launches multiple overdose prevention strategies, while leveraging surveillance and analytics to make programming responsive and equitable. The OD2A Project will distribute naloxone through Boston's neighborhoods using innovative methods and partnerships with stakeholders. The grant will also fund overdose rescue training, increasing capacity in both service providers and the public. Engaging our local partners and integrating feedback from people with lived experience is essential to achieving the project objectives. OD2A Boston prioritizes groups burdened by increased risk of overdose; Black and Latinx communities, as well as people recently incarcerated or experiencing homelessness. The project furthers the agency mission of protecting, preserving and promoting the health and well-being of all Boston residents, particularly those who are most vulnerable. OD2A aligns with BPHC's strategic plan and commitment to be a model leader in addressing racial justice and health equity. As part of the cooperative agreement, Boston works closely with the CDC and networks with other OD2A jurisdictions across the country, sharing information about emerging practices.

DUTIES

  • Manage and advance implementation of the harm reduction strategy for Boston OD2A, conducting overdose rescue training and distributing naloxone through innovative methods and partnerships.
  • Function as a member of a multidisciplinary team in providing overdose rescue education and training to people who are incarcerated or transitioning out of incarceration, people who actively use substances and their networks, treatment providers, community coalitions, law enforcement, business owners and other groups as needed.
  • Provide trainings in Spanish.
  • Iterate and update training curriculum and materials in response to emerging trends, needs, and research.
  • Strengthen and coordinate existing harm reduction partnerships and help build new partnerships.
  • Set up innovative new distribution channels for harm reduction supplies and educational materials.
  • Coordinate pickups of naloxone and delivery to organizations; track and follow up to conduct restocking.
  • Facilitate local partners utilizing State programs offering free and subsidized harm reduction supplies.
  • Provide technical assistance around writing naloxone policies in local organizations.
  • Work with community coalitions to encourage community-based overdose prevention programming and strategies.
  • Train new staff on delivering overdose rescue trainings.
  • Assist with the training of peer educators.
  • Collaborate with community services organizations, health centers, community coalitions, and other partners to to assess their training needs and create plans to address the training needs.
  • Document and collects information regarding trainings provided.
  • Work with the OD2A evaluator and dashboard development team to ensure the harm reduction strategy is evaluated effectively and integrated into analytics.
  • Contribute to annual grant planning.
  • Performs other duties as required.
