What are the responsibilities and job description for the Recreational Sports Coach After School position at Boys & Girls Club of Santa Monica?
Required availability: Monday - Thursday after school hours.
Head coaches are required to attend games on Saturday morning/afternoon.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for coaching youth in a variety of sports. Our sports are recreational and are to provide our youth members with a fun physical activity experience in a variety of sports. Coaches will help coach, schedule and supervise our sports programs. Coaches are expected to have a general knowledge of sports and the rules of football, volleyball and basketball but are not expected to be experts in the field. This position welcomes entry level coach applicants as the Club will be providing guidance and training throughout their position with the Club.
ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Coach and provide players with instructions in the rules, regulations, equipment, and techniques of a sports program, including, but not limited to, football, flag football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
- Teach skills through effectively planned practices at a level appropriate for each member of the team. Coaches will be provided training on skill teaching.
- Organize the team’s student athletes to participate in games and actively coach them during practice and games.
- Assist in coordinating schedules, referees, and leagues.
- Help create a schedule and conduct a pre-season parent orientation and a postseason meeting with the athlete’s parents.
- Communicate practice and game schedules with parents – including any changes to the schedule.
- Encourage parent involvement and coordinate their assistance as volunteers.
- Supervise athletes before, during, and immediately after all practices and games.
- Provide a safe, enjoyable environment for all players, by offering each child the opportunity to participate and demonstrating good sportsmanship.
- Help develop injury prevention methods, evaluate injuries. Highest priority is the safety of the Club members.
- Be able to enforce program rules for specific areas and maintain vigilance of youth at all times.
Prepare Youth for Success:
- Promote program participation.
- Provide guidance and role modeling to members.
- Register new members and participate in their club orientation process.
Program Development and Implementation:
- Effectively implement and administer a physical education program and activities for members using training/guidance provided by SMBGC.
- Organize, monitor, and direct group practice activities or exercises.
- Maintain the equipment in an orderly condition and assume responsibility for its security.
- Assist in the creation of bulletin boards, display of member activities and other department objectives as needed.
- Prepare weekly and monthly schedules. Guidance on this will be provided by the Club.
- Monitor and evaluate programs, services and activities to ensure safety of members, quality in programs and appearance of the unit at all times.
- Prepare periodic activity reports.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee special programs and/or events (i.e. Biddy/Senior Basketball Leagues, Tournaments, Clinics, etc.) and/or participate in the implementation of other activities as directed.
- Must attend staff meetings and participate in staff training events.
- May consult with parents concerning member and Club issues.
- May be required to drive Club vehicle as needed.
- Participation in special programs and/or events beyond regular hours, including weekends.
- Other duties as assigned.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal: Maintain close, daily, contact with Club staff (professional/volunteer), Club members, and supervisor to receive/provide information, discuss issues, explain or interpret guidelines/instructions; instruct, and advise/counsel.
External: Maintain contact as needed with external community groups, schools, member’s parent and other to assist in resolving problems or issues.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred but not required.
- Minimum of two years’ work experience in a Boys & Girls Club or similar equivalent experience coaching students.
- Exceptional work ethic, organized and self-motivated.
- Experience working independently, managing time efficiently, and setting their own schedule.
- Proven ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and prioritize to meet goals and objectives.
- Experience working with youth and adults of diverse identities and backgrounds.
- A team player who enjoys working with others and aligning to achieve higher strategic goals and objectives for youth.
- Fluent ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish preferred.
- Basic knowledge in a variety of sports, low organization games, individual/dual activities, including, but not limited to, football, flag football, volleyball, basketball, and soccer.
- Knowledgeable in the fundamental principle of coaching/sports. Entry level knowledge is acceptable, additional training will be provided.
- Demonstrated knowledge of youth development, safe and appropriate activities for youth, and understanding of the culture and community in which the clubhouse is located.
- Team building/conflict resolution, motivational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- Must have a valid California Driver's License and Red Cross certification in First Aid & CPR.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Frequent standing and walking; occasional lifting (up to 25 pounds at waist height); hear and understand speech at normal levels; and speak so that others may understand at normal levels.
- Ability to engage in physical activity with student athletes without limitation.
- Boys & Girls Clubs are often stressful, busy and noisy environments. Program Specialists are expected to work in situations where many member- and facility- related activities take place at the same time.
