Job Summary:
The Institute for Human Neuroscience at Boys Town National Research Hospital, directed by Dr. Tony Wilson, is revolutionizing human brain research. The Institute includes multiple laboratories, a physical therapy clinic, and is home to state of the art neuroimaging instruments (including a new 3T Siemens Prisma MRI system, two next-generation MEG Neo systems, an optically-pumped magnetometry (OPM) system, and a mock MRI scanner).
We are currently recruiting for a Scientific Communications Manager position. Under the supervision of the Director of IHN Research Operations, the Scientific Communications Manager works with the Institute’s research scientists, physical therapists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and research staff to clearly communicate IHN’s activities, purpose, and impact to multiple non-scientific audiences within the Omaha community and beyond.
Major Responsibilities:
- Maintain a solid understanding of the research and clinical findings/operations of all laboratories within the Institute for Human Neuroscience (IHN) and works to distill high level scientific concepts down into understandable information for lay audiences.
- Create written products that distill, highlight, and publicize the cutting-edge research happening at IHN that could be used on websites, press releases, social media campaigns, mailings, flyers, or magazines. This will include a quarterly newsletter that is sent to our research participants and other community members involved in the IHN.
- Give in-person tours, virtual talks, and attend outreach events to share science happening at IHN with others. Audiences for these tours and events could be both local and national.
- Responsible for identifying and creating opportunities for community engagement and outreach (e.g., within schools or youth/community events or within communities of interest to increase participant recruitment) that broadly share scientific findings, increase interaction with community stakeholders, increase youth interest in science broadly, and/or encourage participation in IHN studies. Greater engagement of minority communities is of special priority.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to apply knowledge of the scientific method and the ability to read scientific publications and then distill this information into communications that are accessible to lay audiences.
- Effective and engaging public speaker.
- Outstanding creativity and attention to detail.
- Enthusiasm for the scientific enterprise.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment that encourages teamwork, interdependence, respectful communication, and ethical actions.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines while managing competing priorities
Education, Experience, and Other Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree required, science, education or a related field is preferred.
- Knowledge of the scientific method required
- Minimum of two years of teaching or outreach experience preferred.
