IV Infusion Nurse Job Description
Nursing responsibilities for IV therapy include inserting, monitoring, and removing an IV used to give medications.
An IV therapy nurse must be able to work independently, as well as on a team. IV therapy nurses may have to teach the patient how to properly care for their IV or PICC line, which is used on patients needing frequent or long-term IV treatment, and must be able to communicate with patients clearly while giving instructions
During the IV therapy, the nurse monitors the patient for adverse reactions and ensures that the Picc line, Portacaths, and peripheral lines are cared for appropriately per state care regulations and standard of care . The nurse performs vein punctures for lab test such as vancomycin trough and CPK levels. During the entire IV therapy process, the nurse documents all patient-related activities and records the medications used.
Responsibilities
The Infusion Nurse provides professional nursing care for the safety and well-being of our patients.
- Adheres to policies and procedures addressing the scope of services outlined in both Infusion nursing services, pharmacy services, and state laws and regulations
- Adheres to INS and IgNS standards of practice, CDC guidelines, scope and standards of practice, and code of ethics as defined by American Nurses Association
- Collaborates with pharmacy staff, physician, and patient to develop and monitor goals of patients’ therapies
- Assesses all patients assigned and establishes and implements the Plan of Care
- Manages vascular access devices, to include insertion of peripheral infusion devices or peripherally inserted catheters (only if certified)
- Educates patients and caregivers
- Evaluates progress toward goals and makes recommendations to physicians for changes in the Plan of Care based on patients’ needs
- Coordinates nursing care with home health and other community agencies as indicated
Qualifications:
Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Bachelor of Science in Nursing preferred
