Since our founding in 1912, the Bucks County SPCA has been committed to alleviating the suffering of animals through animal cruelty investigation and prosecution. Our team of Humane Society Police Officers (HSPO) travels the entire county educating the community on animal welfare and investigating claims of animal cruelty and neglect.

We are hiring a Humane Society Police Officer who is tasked with enforcing Pennsylvania’s Animal Neglect and Cruelty Laws (18 C.S.A. 5532 et seq), as well as coordinating with state and local agencies, the Bucks County District Attorney’s office, internal teams, and community members to improve the welfare of animals in our county. A qualified candidate will be expected to work in accordance with the law and the policies set forth by Bucks County SPCA. The HSPO will report to BCSPCA’s Chief Humane Society Police Officer. This full-time position is based in Lahaska and works a Sunday – Thursday schedule with some flexibility required to accommodate special situations.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts animal cruelty investigations, as assigned by Chief HSPO, providing professional handling of evidence (including animals), crime scene, interrogations, photography, report-writing, court appearances and all other aspects in accordance with Pennsylvania State Law and Bucks County SPCA’s policies.
  • Responsible for coordinating and tracking all aspects of cruelty investigation animal intake, care and outcomes including: collecting pertinent historical information, assigning animals to system pathways, housing, feeding, exercise, adoption, transfer to other organizations and euthanasia.
  • Communicates proactively, openly, positively, and regularly with all shelter teams, volunteers, and outside law enforcement agencies both verbally and in written form.
  • Completes documentation for cases, including written reports and entering them into a database and/or other tracking methods
  • Participates in state-required continuing education classes as dictated by law to maintain HSPO status through the PA Department of Agriculture.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all matters relating to investigations
  • Maintain a professional manner, abide by Pennsylvania State Laws and Bucks County SPCA’s policies and mission in every aspect of the position.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • College degree preferred, high school diploma required
  • Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s license
  • Criminal background check must be satisfactory
  • Must meet all qualifications set forth by Pennsylvania State Law
  • Animal handling experience required (large animal experience is a plus)
  • Cruelty investigation or other law enforcement experience required
  • Strong customer service skills and a positive attitude
  • Mid-level computer skills and use of standard office equipment
  • Ability to take a direction and work positively in a team environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to convey instructions and information in a clear, concise manner
  • Ability to use logic and define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions
  • Ability to tell right from wrong and adhere to a strict level of honesty
  • Take direction and work within the parameters of the position as outlined by Chief HSPO
  • Physical requirements include ability to talk, hear, and see, as well as sit, stand, walk and regularly lift and move up to 60lbs

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $45,760.00 - $58,240.00 per year

Experience:

  • Law enforcement: 1 year (Preferred)
