The Position:
Production Utility Operator
Job Summary:
JOB PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES:
This employee performs general labor duties in the production areas. The individual may be required to use electrical, mechanical and air-operated tools to perform his/her duties. The individual may also be required to operate light and heavy machinery such as, but not limited to, forklifts, front-end loaders, track mobiles, etc. The individual will have to troubleshoot problems and provide accurate feedback to the Supervisor.
The individual may be required to assist maintenance technicians during shutdowns under supervision. The individual must be able to work shifts.
KEY RESULTS AREAS / PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Essential duties and responsibilities include and are not limited to the following:
- Ensure the company safety rules are followed; Perform safety inspections on every shift and fill out the log sheets.
- Clean work area, machines, tools and equipment.
- Sweep, remove spills or waste material.
- Manually move or pile material or supplies.
- Maintain proper operation of mobile equipment by performing general preventative maintenance on them
- Dump the ball charges from the plant grinding mills and recharge as required.
- Load and unload raw materials, supplies and finished product from ships, rail cars or trucks and install strapping, bracing or padding whenever necessary to prevent shifting or damage in transit.
- Load and unload material onto or from pallets, trays, rack or shelves.
- Start the palletizer and packing system including the purging of the packing machines.
- Weigh and mix fluidix batches.
- Prepare finished product for shipment or storage by placing them in shipping containers.
- Count, weigh and record the number of units of materials moved or handled on daily production sheets.
- Prepare samples of materials, label with identifying information and take samples to the laboratory for analysis.
- Maintain proper operation of equipment.
- Be able to troubleshoot problems
- Make simple mechanical adjustments or repairs to equipment
- Maintain appearance and condition of the plant.
- Other duties as assigned.

- Ensure that they attend all Safety Training
- Adhere to all company policies and procedures
- Reporting of accidents, near misses and First aid incidents
- Basic troubleshooting skills to identify root causes of problems
- Practice good housekeeping
- Complete all check lists correctly.
- Ensure that all equipment shift and pre-start checks are done thoroughly
- Ensure that the correct lubrication is used in the relevant equipment.
- Ensure that pallets are stacked correctly so they do not fall
- Be able to inspect and operate all mobile equipment correctly, safely and report faults
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and /or ability required.
The person must have the ability to read and comprehend simple instructions. They must have the ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization and work at times with limited or minimal supervision.
The individual must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. The individual must be able to learn and operate heavy equipment safety.
The person must have the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. They must have the ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Education:
Individuals should have a high school diploma or equivalent or be able to pass the equivalent learning skills.
Knowledge: Manufacturing knowledge, safety practices a plus.
KEY CHALLENGES
At times, this position must be flexible to working any schedule based on customer demands and unloading ships with raw materials from overseas.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
- Ability to climb, and work from ladders & scaffolds
- Ability to walk considerable distances to work assignments (at least the length of the property).
- Ability to stand for long periods of time while working on equipment
- Ability to operate a tricycle which are available on site to take utility to work assignments and carry required tools (safely)
- Ability to climb 5 flights of stairs, while caring tool and or other items.(safely)
- Ability to lift and/or work overhead
- Ability to stand and or work in confined space for 30 – 45 minutes at a time
- Ability to wear hard hat, steel toe safety shoes, safety glasses, respirator, gloves and other job task specific PPE as determined by Work Permit
- Work Environment: As Production Utility, you are subject to both indoor and outdoor environmental conditions. In this position you will be subject to noise, vibration and hazards. This includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat, extreme cold or exposure to chemicals and product raw materials.
- This position is exposed to a cement and often dusty plant work environment and with contact with our product. Based on the hazards of working in a plant/industrial environment, this position requires alertness, the ability to think rationally while working on multiple tasks.
- This position needs the ability to express or exchange ideas, provide detailed spoken instructions by means of the spoken word to impact oral information to managers, suppliers, contractors, co-workers, direct reports or the public.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel, reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and talk or hear.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
