Job Posting for Vector Borne Disease Surveillance Program Intern at Calhoun County of Michigan
Under the general direction of the Environmental Public Health Director, serves as supporting role in Calhoun County Public Health Department’s vector surveillance program. This internship allows students to expand their skills in a laboratory and field setting.

Placement and collection of mosquito traps
Tick collection
Identification of ticks and mosquitos collected
Regular reporting of tick and mosquito numbers to MDHHS/other agencies
Packaging, shipping mosquitos and/or ticks for disease testing
Assist in community engagement, public outreach, and public education
Assist in working with municipalities to implement strategies for reducing mosquito/tick-human interaction
18 years of age or older
Minimum High School Diploma or obtaining within the next 3 months
Preferred:
Experience identifying arthropods using a dichotomous key
Experience using a microscope and other laboratory equipment
Candidate must demonstrate experience or strong interest in the fields of Public Health, Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Health Science, Biology, Entomology, or other closely related field
Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
A valid Michigan's driver's license, an acceptable driving record, and a personal vehicle including proof of insurance are required
Working Conditions
Work will consist of both office environment and outdoor environment
Exposure to interior and/or exterior hot or cold conditions
Potential exposure to mosquitos, ticks, and other insects
Periodically required to stoop, bend, or kneel to accommodate different working positions
Ability to traverse uneven terrain
Potential for contact with chemicals, toxins, pathogens, and/or infectious disease
Regular travel between county locations
